Rotary Club
Rotary International was founded in 1905. The name Rotary was selected as they initially rotated their weekly club meetings to each other’s offices. Rotary first became an international group with the charter of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, on April 13, 1912.
Rotary International is an international service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Rotary International is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all people.
Aylmer Rotary Club
The Rotary Club was the first service club established in Aylmer. The charter for the Aylmer Rotary Club was presented by Rotary International on November 27, 1931 by District Governor E.J. Ottaway. Harold Hambidge was installed as the president for 1932. The charter members were Tom Barnecott, Chas. Brooks, Frank Butcher, Harry Charlton, Kenneth Christie, J. Byron Clark, D. Halpenny, Harold Hambidge, Fred Hardy, Ross Leach, Earnest Livermore, Homer McLay, E. Lorne Miller, N. Gordon Snelgrove, Harold White, John Wilson, and Gerald Winter.
The Aylmer Rotary Club has met at many locations over the years. The Rotary Club initially met on Friday nights at 6:15 pm at Valencia Court on Talbot Street East in Aylmer. When Valencia Court closed the club began to meet at the Kapogines Restaurant. The Rotary Club then met for several years at the Aylmer Legion. During this time the Group also met at the Cabin in the Pines as Art Caverly was a member. From June 30, 1947 until October of 1972 they met at the Trinity Anglican Church. On October 2, 1972 they began meeting at the Black Angus Restaurant on John Street north. In recent years they met at the Central Family Restaurant.
The service work of the Aylmer Rotary Club was at both the international and local levels. Internationally the club has supported and participated in student exchanges, fellowships for post graduate students, and exchanges of business and professional leaders. They also heavily supported the Eastern Seals Campaign for many decades. Locally, the club has supported many projects within the community, including the development of swimming facilities, supporting youth programs such as minor baseball, minor hockey, figure skating, swimming, and creating high school scholarships. The Club also ran many successful raffles, raffling off cars, snowmobiles, televisions, and a trip to Barbados over their years of service. They also ran the Farmers Banquet which was held the first Friday in December for farmers from the surrounding community. The Farmers Banquet ran from 1934 until 1997.
The Aylmer Rotary Club folded in 2018.
