- Scope and Content
- Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 15, 1960 with captions: " Many Trophies- One of the outstanding plowmen to compete in the 1960 International Plowing Matches was Cecil Wells, R. R. 2, Paris. Mr. Wells won more than one plowing class and is seen above as he received an Ontario Plowmen's Association Trophy from James A. McBain, M.P. for Elgin." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12a) " Bank Trophy To Thornton Man- W. K. Thomas, R. R. 2, Thornton, was the winner in one International Plowing Match event and was on hand last night to receive a Bank of Montreal Trophy from G. L. Johnstone, manager of the St. Thomas branch of the bank. More than 30 presentations were made during the evening." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12b) " Agricultural Minister Speaks- A highlight of Last night's International Plowing Match banquet at the Elgin St. Thomas Memorial Arena was a brief talk by the Hon. W. A. Goodfellow, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, who is seen above as he addressed the gathering of nearly 1,200 people. In the background may be seen Mrs. Lynda Prong, R. R. 1, Aylmer, the International's first queen of the furrow." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12c) " Fine Horses- One of the closing events of the I.P.M. was a horse show held near the main entrance. To qualify for prizes in the show the horses must have plowed in the competitions on at least one of the four days of the show. The animals, all draught-horses, are pictured above awaiting the judge." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12d) " Centre Of Interest- The new farm inventions class added this year to the International Plowing Match produced several odd but useful machines. The one in the above photo is a two furrow roll-over plow made by Frank Baertsoen and Sons located on Highway 3 two miles west of Aylmer. The plow is designed so that when the plowman comes to the end of a furrow he pulls a lever, the plow rolls over, and he can start back in the same furrow. Pictured from left to right around the tractor are Arnold Baertsoen, Charles Baertsoen, (driving), and Frank Baertsoen." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12e)
