- Physical Description

- Scope and Content
- Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 15, 1960 with captions: " Many Trophies- One of the outstanding plowmen to compete in the 1960 International Plowing Matches was Cecil Wells, R. R. 2, Paris. Mr. Wells won more than one plowing class and is seen above as he received an Ontario Plowmen's Association Trophy from James A. McBain, M.P. for Elgin." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12a) " Bank Trophy To Thornton Man- W. K. Thomas, R. R. 2, Thornton, was the winner in one International Plowing Match event and was on hand last night to receive a Bank of Montreal Trophy from G. L. Johnstone, manager of the St. Thomas branch of the bank. More than 30 presentations were made during the evening." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12b) " Agricultural Minister Speaks- A highlight of Last night's International Plowing Match banquet at the Elgin St. Thomas Memorial Arena was a brief talk by the Hon. W. A. Goodfellow, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, who is seen above as he addressed the gathering of nearly 1,200 people. In the background may be seen Mrs. Lynda Prong, R. R. 1, Aylmer, the International's first queen of the furrow." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12c) " Fine Horses- One of the closing events of the I.P.M. was a horse show held near the main entrance. To qualify for prizes in the show the horses must have plowed in the competitions on at least one of the four days of the show. The animals, all draught-horses, are pictured above awaiting the judge." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12d) " Centre Of Interest- The new farm inventions class added this year to the International Plowing Match produced several odd but useful machines. The one in the above photo is a two furrow roll-over plow made by Frank Baertsoen and Sons located on Highway 3 two miles west of Aylmer. The plow is designed so that when the plowman comes to the end of a furrow he pulls a lever, the plow rolls over, and he can start back in the same furrow. Pictured from left to right around the tractor are Arnold Baertsoen, Charles Baertsoen, (driving), and Frank Baertsoen." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 12e)

R. 2, Springfield, on whose farm the big match will centre in October, has his hands full these days. Realizing this, two helpful neighbors turned out Wednesday to help combine Mr. Hume's 60 acres of oats, thereby cutting at least five days off the time normally required for the work. Here, cutting a wide swath through the Hume oat field are Leo Bogart, in the lead combine; Charles Clarke, centre, and Giles Hume (Mr. Hume's son), bringing up the rear. It was expected harvesting would be completed today."

Spectators at the I.P.M. yesterday, especially the younger ones, showed a keen interest in the horse plowing class as many had never seen the sturdy animals at work. In the above photo Jim McCloy, of R.R. 2, Southwold, is pictured putting his two-horse team through their paces."

In this class competitors, many from distant points in the province and almost all seasoned performers, matched their talents to see who would go home with the title of champion plowman of Ontario. In the above photo Joseph G. Tran, of R.R. 2, Claremont, is pictured beginning his final furrow. The even furrows are an indication of the class of plowing exhibited by entrants in the event."

Springfield Location Well Marked - Motorists travelling along No. 73 Highway in the Springfield area can hardly fail to notice the 20-foot-long sign pictured above which advertises the location and dates for the International Plowing Match. The sign was erected Monday afternoon on the northwest corner of the farm of Charles Clarke, R.R. 2, Springfield, where a large part of the big match will take place. The billboard served the same purpose last year in Wentworth County, and the previous year at Simcoe. Assisting with the work were Franklin Pineo, local I.P.M. committee chairman; Ken Bawden, Tented City committee chairman; Reginald Clinton, health and sanitation chairman; Giles Hume, R.R. 2, Springfield, on whose home farm much of the activity will centre; Herb Morris, Bill Johnston and Mr. Clarke."

- Three black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 11, 1960 with captions:
- "Business Operations Continue- When a spectacle as large as the International Plowing Match is presented, many people are responsible for its success. Shown ironing out some of the problems which invariably come up in such a huge undertaking, are, left to right: Frank Pineo, chairman of Local Commitee, and Elliot Moses, a director of the Ontario Plowmen's Association." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85a)
- "Father And Son- Plowing got under way bright and early this morning at the I.P.M. Elgin County was well represented in the boys and girls 14 to 17 class. In the above photo, Arnold Stansell, a prominent Aylmer Ayrshire breeder, is pictured coaching his son Stewart. Both Mr. Stansell and Stewart said the land was very dry for plowing and the crown of each furrow had a tendency to crumble." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85b)
- "Changed Scene- Thomas J. Hume is pictured here looking out over the Tented City that has mushroomed on his farm near Springfield. The Hume farm is the center of operations in the 47th International Plowing Matches which began this morning on 14 Springfield area farms." (C8 Sh5 B2 F6 85c)

- Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published October 12, 1960 with caption: "Champion Mayor - Plowing at yesterday's opening of the International Plowing Match may have been more skillfully done but certainly no more care or discrimination went into the turning of a furrow than was exhibited by the leaders of a number of Ontario communities who entered the new class for mayors. After the cheers and jokes had died away however, Mayor D.A. Gooding, of Parkhill, was named champion of the mayors. In the above photo the happy winner is pictured proudly displaying a trophy on which his name and the date of the match will be engraved."
