- History / Biographical
- The House of Industry and Refuge was opened in 1876 and occupied a 50-acre site that included a farm, of which the residents (considered "inmates" at the time) helped maintain. A plan of the site shows that between its opening in 1876 and 1894, 128 men, women and children were buried on the grounds in an unmarked cemetery. In 2006, a monument was erected at the site in memory of those who are buried on the property. The building was decommissioned in 1963, and a new building was constructed on site, which opened in 1964; the 1964 building being replaced in 2003. As of 2022, the site remains home to Elgin Manor, a long-term care facility.
