Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on September 13, 1949, page ten: “Presentation of Eva McCulley Memorial Trophy.”: “Show at the presentation ceremonies are M.J. McIntyre, Mrs. Eva Mc Culley, Joan Millar, Mrs. Millar and Rev. Bruce Millar.” 2_2078: “Monday was a red-letter day in the life of one St. Thomas young lady, namely Joan Millar, daughter of Rev. Bruce Millar, and Mrs. Millar. At a three o’clock ceremony, conducted before the staff and pupils of Wellington Street School, Joan received the Eva McCulley Memorial trophy, awarded annually by Joseph McCulley, Deputy Commissioner of Penitentiaries, in memory of his sister, Miss Eva Mc Culley, who was formerly on the Wellington Street School teaching staff.” The award is presented to the girl or boy in the entrance class of the past year, who qualifies as the best all-round students, good citizens, good athlete, and who is popular with students and teachers alike. Mrs. McCulley, of the St. Thomas Board of Education and mother of Joseph McCulley, presented the award. Mrs. McCulley and the late Miss Eva McCulley, presented the award. Mrs. McCulley declaring that Joan has fulfilled all the ideals for which the cup stands, also stated that while every student cannot win the trophy, all can work hard toward its ideal, thus building up their character to be good citizens of democratic Canada. Joan Millar, in accepting the trophy, first of all thanked her mother and father for their help and interest, and expressed appreciation also to the teachers of the school. Joan, who leaves shortly for Toronto, where her father, Rev. Mr. Millar assumes the pastorate of St. James-Bond United Church, said that the trophy would be kept in a place of prominence to remind her of happy times in St. Thomas. Murray J. McIntyre, acting principal in the absence of Leslie T. Holmes, had change of the ceremonies and introduced Mrs. McCulley.”
