- Scope and Content
- Seven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published June 27, 1964 with captions:
- 91a: "News of the World - News from points all over the world flows into The Times-Journal's news department via teletype from Canadian press and Associated Press. Pictured reading the latest news are three Grade 6 pupils from Elgin Court School, left to right, Roland Foster, David Stewart and Kathy Harris. (T-J Photo)"
- 91b: "Photo Engraving - A most modern electronic process is used to engrave the news photographs used in The Times-Journal. Pictured watching the Scan-a-graver electronic engraving machine at work are, left to right, Janet Harkins, Lee Robertson, and Thomas Coates, all Grade 6 pupils at Lynhurst School. The photo image is engraved on a heavy plastic material. (T-J Photo)"
- 91c: "Linotype in Operation - Most visitors of The Times-Journal plant are fascinated by the operation of the linotype machine, seen above being operated by Thomas Swindells. The deft touch of the operator on the keyboard transforms the news into column-wide type. Watching the operation are Randy Baker, left, Albert Patterson, and Effie Heslinga, all of Lynhurst School. (T-J Photo)"
- 91d: "Hot Metal Casting - Elgin Court School students Bryce Scott, Jane Cunningham and Susan Vaughan, watch the shell casting process being carried out by Harry Bentley of the stereotype department. This process involves the making of metal casts from mats. Molten lead is poured into the casting machine to produce the desired forms. (T-J Photo)"
- 91e: "Another Kind of Composition - Students are well aware of one meaning of the word composition but when they visit The Times-Journal plant they find the word is applied not to the assembly of words on paper but to the assembly of type in a page form. Ron Gilmore, composing room apprentice, is pictured above telling Deborah Ker, left, Glenna Donald and Donald John, all Grade 6 pupils of Elgin Court School, how a full-page advertisement is composed. (T-J Photo)"
- 91f: "Nearly Ready to Roll - The half-round plates have been bolted to the high-speed rotary press, final adjustments have been made, and in a few moments the press will start to sing its ever-increasing crescendo as it picks up speed to turn out newspapers at the rate of up to 36,000 copies per hour. Taking one last look before the warning bell rings are, left to right, Michael Spearman, Dana Bailey, Terry Wilson and Steven Moore. (T-J Photo)."
- 91g: "Fresh off the Press - The ink is barely dry on these copies of The Times-Journal as they flow along a conveyer belt from the high-speed press to the mailing room. In the mailing room the papers are bundled and wrapped for delivery to homes throughout St. Thomas and Elgin County. Bill Parkins, left, Mark Langley and Steven Reynolds, of Lynhurst School, watch the operation. (T-J Photo)"
