History / Biographical
33rd Battalion Ladies’ Group was formed in April of 1935, by the wives of the members of the 33rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 33rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. The Battalion was authorized on 7 November 1914 and embarked for Great Britain on 1 April 1916. It was re-designated as the 33rd Reserve Battalion, CEF on 6 April 1916 and it provided reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field until 6 July 1916, when its personnel were absorbed by the 36th Battalion, CEF. The battalion was disbanded on 17 July 1917.
The 33rd Battalion Ladies’ Group held monthly social meetings. The last entry in their meeting minutes book was October 1968. The groups likely had connections to the 33rd Battalion Comrade’s Club, a men’s social group.
The donor of the records in this fonds, Joan Turner, stated the following about her recollections about the group: "My grandfather, Harry Heard, was a member of the 33rd Battalion in WWI. After the war, several members of the group would meet at the legion for Friday night (or other nights) drinks, share stories etc. Their wives formed the 33rd Battalion Ladies’ Group. My grandmother, Florence Heard, was part of this group and often served as secretary - hence she had the minute book. My understanding is that the group dissolved due to few remaining members still alive and able to participate. I think it was in existence until the 1960’s. They would visit fellow members in hospital, arrange showers, trousseau teas, refreshments at wakes and funerals, celebrate birthdays, and anniversaries. I don’t know of any specific philanthropy work that they did, but knowing my Grandmother, I’m sure they donated their time and energies whenever possible. My Grandmother was a very strict tea totaler and only allowed for the drinks for my Grandfather at the Legion. It was difficult (understatement) in WWI. I know Harry was in the trenches and was injured twice. It was understood that the men needed an outlet to vent, share and deal with the horrible memories of traumas they experienced. Despite the fact that most of the members of the 33rd came from St Thomas and Elgin areas, they also originated from England and were relatively new immigrants at the time of the war - very proud to fight for Canada".
Custodial History
The 33rd Battalion Ladies’ Group records were donated on July 20, 2018 by Joan Turner.

Description
Framed lithographic print of an advertisement of Ferry's Seeds. The print has a tan background, and at the top of the image is a white circle. Within the white circle is a woman, depcited from the shoulders upward, facing to the right in a three-quarter view. She wears a green hat or bonnet decorated with pink flowers. She holds a bouquet of pink, purple, and green flowers up to her face. The woman fades into the background below the shoulders, but the bouquet trails down to the bottom of the image. Description
Framed lithographic print of an advertisement for the Pompeian Manufacturing Company. The print features a woman, depcited in full. She wears a hat with a wide brim and an elaborately embroidered dress. The hat is light blue or purple in colour, and decorated with large blue and purple feathers and a jewelled, golden-coloured metal embellishment. The dress is also a light blue or purple, with a Queen Anne-type neckline and an ornate brooch on her chest, golden in colour and decorated with inlaid and dangling gems, from which strings of pearls trail downward to drape around her hips. The embroidery on the dress is golden in colour, and forms a swirling organic pattern, interspersed with red gems. The woman holds a handkerchief or scarf up to her right cheek with a white-gloved hand. There are white lilies at the bottom left corner of the image. A small panel at the bottom of the image reads "'POMPEIAN BEAUTY' BY FORBES." Below the panel is the text "COPYRIGHT, 1909, BY THE POMPEIAN MFG. CO." Details, the background, and the small panel at the bottom of the image are either overlaid with gold leaf or printed with a gold-laced pigment. The image has a grey marbled matting with a purple inner border. Displayed in a gold-coloured wood and plaster frame and overlaid with glass. The outer edge of the frame has a simple, repeating rope-like pattern, and the inner edge has a simple, repeating pattern of dots or spheres. The back of the frame is covered in a thin, brown paper. A wire runs horizontally across the back of the frame, attached to a metal loop at each side. There is a business card adhered to the bottom at the back of the frame, which reads "Custom Framing and Design MINERVA ART & CUSTOM FRAMING, The Old School House, RR #7, Aylmer, Ont. N5H 2R6. KEVIN MORRELL, Owner. 1-519-765-1616." The Pompeian Manufacturing Company was largely known for their Pompeian Massage Cream and Skin Food, trademarked in 1901 and developed by British pharmacist Fred W. Stecher. The company went on to manufacture beauty powder, cold cream, rouge, lipstick, and various cosmetic products. The Pompeian Manufacturing Company was liquidated in 1950.
