- Mary and Shirley Sparkman were the daughters of Reuben Sparkman, the older brother of Ned Sparks. Their mother is Ida Venetia Stringall. Reuben Sparkman and Ida Stringall married in Victoria, B.C., on October 1, 1906. Mary was born on July 31, 1907 and died May 5, 1991. Shirley Sparkman was born on June 26, 1908 and died August 20, 2007. Shirley married Vernon Fretz. Their daughter, Dareil, was born ca. 1933.

Though he died in California in 1954 and was born in Guelph, he always thought of St. Thomas as his home, and regularly arranged for his films to be brought specifically to the city.
