The Gilbert House at the south end of Margaret Street was constructed by Marwood A Gilbert, an agent (bank manager) for the Imperial Bank in 1878. This image is looking west. The first comment is a view looking south in the 1920's. (note the changes in the porch) It was described by the St.Thomas Journal in November 1878 as "a fine 2 1/12 story brick dwelling, Cost $6000. Henry Lindop, Contractor (he was the builder of Alma College, plus hundreds of other local buildings). N. R. Darrach, Architect (this would be one of his earliest designs, Centre Street Baptist, Grand Central Hotel, City Hall, Wellington St. School, Elgin Court House, are some of his others.) The house was last owned by Allen Cliffe and was demolished in 1967 and replaced by the current home".
