- History / Biographical
- George Elliott Casey was born to William and Sarah Casey on March 24, 1850 in the Township of Southwold. He received his education from the University of Toronto and married Sarah Isabella Biggar (daughter of MP James Lyons Biggar) in 1877. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Elgin West from 1872 to 1900. At the time, he was the youngest member of the House of Commons. In 1903, he was appointed to the Canadian Parliamentary Library in Ottawa. In the same year, he died in Ottawa at the age of 53.
According to comments received from the public, a tornado in August 1990 passed through the Township of Southwold and destroyed the large trees in front of this property. In addition, it has been rumoured that Sir Wilfred Laurier stayed at this home during a visit to the County of Elgin. The home was next to the McNish Estate, formerly owned by the Hagerty family, who was also a Member of Parliament. In the 1980s, the owners at the time carried out significant restoration efforts, including restoring the original marble fireplace.
- Scope and Content
- Photographs showing the former home of George Elliott Casey at 37015 Fingal Line, east of Fingal. Include exterior and interior views, and were likely taken during a tour organized by the West Elgin Genealogical and Historical Society.
