Black and white photograph showing the Springfield Methodist Church, later St. John's United Church, located at the corner of Main and Superior Streets. The Methodist congregation was first organized in the 1830s. The corner stone was laid on July 1, 1878 for the brick church, and dedicated on January 16, 1879. The church was rebuilt in 1902 after sparks from a fire on the north side of the street ignited the bird nests in the bell tower and caught fire. After the Union in 1925 between the Springfield Methodist and Chalmer's Presbyterian, the church was renamed St. John, because all the leaders involved in the union were named John.
