Image(s) reproduced with permission for reference purposes only.
Scope and Content
Black and white photograph shows the "Abbey" and Moedingers' hardware, undertaking and furniture shop. "The Abbey"was originally used as an inn. Later it became a residence and in 1844 a printing shop was on the second floor. When Louis W. Moedinger (d.1905) and his wife Catherine Barbara came to Sparta about 1859, they set-up shop on the south side of Main street across from the Abbey. The Abbey at the time was being used as a cabinet shop by R. J. Stratton. There was also another cabinet shop operated by Ezra Oille. After a time Moedinger bought his competitor out and moved into his shop. Meanwhile, the building on the north-west corner, the old Sparta Hotel, was being used as a general store by Ira Hilborn. Lewis Moedinger (1861-1940) learned the business and purchased the west end of Hilborn's store for an undertaking and hardware establishment. He later secured the whole building. At his death, the business was taken over by his daughter and son-in-law, Robert Harvey. When Miss Amelia Moedinger died in 1945, "The Abbey" was moved west on the same lot, and made into a duplex. The Harvey's then erected a warehouse between it and the store for storage of farm implements and machinery. Included in Sparta Sorosis Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History Book, Volume One.
