- Photographs of a car accident on William street in Port Stanley. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, April 18, 1953, page eleven: “Six Persons Injured in Port Stanley Accident.” 1_142: “In this accident early Saturday morning on William street, Port Stanley: Six people suffered injuries which put five in hospital in St. Thomas and one in London. Provincial Constable Tom Killey, of Port Stanley, is preferring charges against the driver of the car involved. Ralph Vergilio, aged 28, of 54 Paddington street, London, Ont., one of those in hospital suffering from chest injuries mainly. Also in the Vergilio car were John K. Hamblin, 22, of 38 Emery street west, London, in Memorial Hospital where he recovered consciousness two and a half hours after the accident: Miss Marie Michaud, 21, in Victoria Hospital, London, with nose and forehead lacerations; and Miss Helen Devlut, 21, who lives with Miss Michaud at 344 William street, London, who escaped injury. Richard Gatecliffe, Hillcrest road, Port Stanley, driver of the light delivery truck seen in the picture, was uninjured, but his two young passengers, were hurt. Barbara Westicott, 16, of Port Stanley, is in Memorial Hospital with a deep scalp wound just above the forehead hairline. Helen Sims, 16, of Port Stanley, has facial lacerations and was treated in hospital, but not admitted. Constable Killey reported that Gatecliffe was driving the two girls home after baby sitting at his home and was travelling south on William street toward the lake. The northbound Vergilio car collided with the truck with sufficient force to drive the truck backward and off the road, over the west sidewalk and through a wire fence. The Vergilio car slewed around and came to rest on the west side of the road facing southwest in front of Wylie’s grocery store. The officer said Vergilio’s 1938 Plymouth would cost more to repair than the car was worth, and about $750 damage was done to Gatecliffe’s truck.”
