- The 1940 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Demonstration was held in Elgin County October 15-18, 1940, on lands adjacent to the Technical Training School (formerly and subsequently the Ontario Psychiatric Hospital), St. Thomas, Ontario and on Bannockburn Farms, property of Mitchell F. Hepburn, then Premier of Ontario. The event was held under the auspices of the Ontario Plowmen's Association, with extensive organization by the Elgin County Plowmen's Association.

- The International Plowing Match (IPM) is one of two events organized by the Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA), which itself was founded in 1911 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The IPM is the largest outdoor agricultural expo in North America, with the first being successfully run in 1913 on Sunnybrook farm in Toronto. Each IPM takes several years of planning, meaning that there is quite a range of dates for the records for each IPM held. The 2010 IPM held in St. Thomas was celebrating the 99th year of the OPA.
- In terms of administrative structure the IPM has several committees; there are several IPM committee chairs and three vice-chairs of the organization. There is also an organizational committee which plans the event. Above this sits the OPA’s Board of Directors, who oversee the entire project. The chairperson for the 2010 IPM was Duncan McPhail, while the current president of the OPA is David Murray.
- The IPM takes place yearly, and is held on the personal property of a farmer. The fields are turned into a functioning town, featuring around 600 vendors of various types, with thousands arriving and staying multiple days. In the case of the IPM of 2010, the event took place on the farms of Ray Reid and Jason White of St. Thomas.
- It is also an international event, with many competitors coming from across Canada, the United States, and the rest of the world.

- The fonds also included a volunteer uniform which was transferred to the Elgin County Museum.
- Scope and Content
- The fonds contains the records of the 2010 IPM that took place in St. Thomas. The fond contains minutes, financial records, and other materials used by the organizers to set up the event and run it smoothly. The fonds also contains the final reports regarding the event. Finally, the fonds contains the advertisements, photographs, and other materials used to promote the 2010 IPM, as well as news clippings from before, during, and after the event.
