Scope and Content
Black and white photograph of Dr. Annie Amelia Backhouse, who served as the first District President of the Elgin East District Women's Institute from 1907 to 1909, included in the East Elgin Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History, page 8. Dr. Backhouse was born in 1856 and graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with her MD. She helped organize the Aylmer W.I. in 1902, the Courtland W.I. in 1906, and the Port Rowan W.I. in 1918. Dr. Backhouse died on June 16, 1938 at the age of 83.

Mrs. Wheatley was originally a member of the Port Stanley W.I. and acted as president of the branch from 1944 to 1948. She later joined the Aylmer W.I.

Mrs. Boyes was a member of the Lyons W.I. and the Aylmer W.I. She died on July 12, 1966 at the age of 89.
