Scope and Content
Register or "lease book" documenting leases kept between 1 January 1842 and 1 January 1846 for lands in the Talbot Settlement. Register contains information relating to leases in 10 townships in which Talbot oversaw settlement: Aldborough, Bayham, Charlotteville, Dunwich, London, Malahide, Southwold, Townsend, Woodhouse and Yarmouth. Entries are recorded in table form under the township name. Typically, they consist of the name of the lessee, the date and duration of the lease, the rent per annum, notations concerning payment, the lot and concession numbers, the dimensions of the lot, the number of acres under lease and, when applicable, the name of an assignee. Comments concerning the lease are recorded in a "remarks" column. There are three sets of entries for Aldborough and Dunwich Townships. The first set, consisting of tables found on pages 8 to 11, consists of retroactive entries relating to leases dating between 1825 and 1836. The second set of entries (pages 16 to 27) covers the period 1842 to 1845. A notation that "This form is cancelled" is inscribed on each page. The final set of entries covers the period from 1842 to 1846. Although they cover the same period, the second and third sets of entries are not identical. The register also contains instructions from Talbot concerning notices of leases and conditions of lease. The register may have been maintained by Mahlon Burwell or one of his sons.

History / Biographical
Malahide Township lies between Yarmouth and Bayham Townships, and is bounded on the north by South Dorchester and on the south by Lake Erie. It is comprised of about 6,000 acres of land, and received it's name from Colonel Talbot in honour or remembrance of the Castle of Malahide in Ireland.
On January 1st, 1998, Malahide Township amalgamated with the former Township of South Dorchester and the former Village of Springfield. The newly-created municipality, population approximately 8900, decided to keep the name of Malahide Township.
