Photograph of the St. Thomas and Elgin County Centennial glass from E.O. Boehmer and Company. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, January 8, 1952, page nine: “Glasses Mark Centennial.” 2_77: “The accent was placed on the fact that this is the St. Thomas and Elgin County centennial year, Monday evening, at the inaugural meeting of City Council when Harold Whiteside and R.W. Rankin, president of the Chamber of Commerce, appeared at the meeting and presented Mayor Thomas H. Currah and the seven aldermen each with a set of ‘Centennial’ glasses from E.O. Boehmer and Company, Limited, Curtis street, one of the oldest established glass and chinaware wholesale firms in Canada. Mr. Whiteside, who made the presentations explained that the company wished to start Centennial Year off properly by making sure that the 1952 City Council were the first to start using the Centennial glasses. Each set consisted of eight attractive tumblers, with the Centennial greeting and dates 1852-1952 glazed on each glass in white letters and figures. “The glasses have been specially designed and made for Centennial year and are being placed on retail sale in various stores. In addition to presenting the sets of glasses to City Council members, Mr. Whiteside also brought a large glass pitcher, decorated with flowers and another set of glasses strictly for use at Council Meeting. Mr. Whiteside and his associates were thanked by Mayor Currah and also by resolution of Alderman M.B. Ryckman.”

Photographs of Billy Petch instructing ballet dancers Barbara Kaplanis, Joan Robertson and Charline Bennett. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, July 15, 1952, page eight: “Ballet Dancers in the Making.” 2_1240: “Training units of the big cast that will appear in the Historic Spectacle at Athletic Park during the Elgin and St. Thomas Centennial is now in progress. Important among those appearing in this cavalcade of history are the ballet dancers. Shown above is Billy Petch, director of choreography, instructing three of the pretty girls who will appear in the dance sequences, on the lawn of the Centennial secretary, Mrs. E.B. Potts, Yarmouth Heights. Left to right, the girls are: Barbara Kaplanis, 70 Curtis street; Joan Robertson, 181 Forest avenue; Charline Bennett, 81 Redan street. It will be a busy time for Mr. Petch; for Gordon Hilker, production supervisor for Fonger Studios, Toronto; and also for Larry McCance, script writer, commentator and stage director, for the next three weeks. Between 700 and 800 St. Thomas and Elgin people will take part in the Spectacle. They will appear on the largest stage ever built in Western Ontario. The Spectacle is a tremendous undertaking, designed to depict every phase of progress from pioneer days of the Talbot Settlement. The costuming along involves hundreds of dresses and suits, top hats and other finery of other days.”
