Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal published October 22, 1953 with caption: "Plowmen All? - It was a question at Elgin County Plowing Match on Wednesday if county councillors and wardens were good plowmen and from results obtained the result seemed somewhat doubtful. They all had a good time, however, and expert plowing didn't matter. Here are most of the contestants in the class lined up behind Warden W. S. McKillop, reeve of Dunwich, with the plow in hand who placed second. Reading to the rear are: C. M. Williams, deputy reeve of Yarmouth, class winner; P. W. Schleihauf, deputy reeve of Aldborough; Bruce Marr, deputy reeve of Malahide; Charles F. Jackson, reeve of Bayham; J. B. Wilson, reeve of South Dorchester; Cpl. Walter Robinson, O. P. P. St. Thomas, who was admitted as a ringer and won a red ribbon for putting on the best act; Walter Nelson, deputy reeve of Bayham; George Roszell, reeve of Malahide; and Ken Williamson, reeve of Aylmer."

History / Biographical
The Elgin County Plowmen's Association was established in late August, 1922 at a meeting held in the offices of the Elgin County Representative of the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food, C.W. Buchanan. At this meeting the following executive officers were elected: Alex Anderson, President; William Wadland, First Vice-President; Sam Garton, Second Vice-President; and Fred Carr, Secretary. At the same meeting, the following directors were appointed: Roy Evely; J.J. Ashton; C.W. Buchanan; J.R. Teeple, Reeve, Yarmouth Township; and R.A. Penhale, President, Elgin County Board of Trade.
The Association organized the inaugural Elgin County Plowing Match, held October 17-18, 1922 on the farms of James Todd and Alex Anderson near St. Thomas, Ontario. An estimated 4,000 people attended the event, won by William Wadland, Yarmouth Township.
The Second Annual Elgin County Plowing Match was organized by the Elgin County Plowmen's Association and held October 23-24, 1923 on the farms of Mrs. W.A. Hill and D.W. Bearss, just north of St. Thomas, Ontario. William Wadland, Yarmouth Township was declared champion for the second consecutive year.
The Third Annual Elgin County Plowing Match was held October 29, 1924 on the farm of J.H. Miller, just north of Dutton, Ontario.
The Elgin County Plowmen's Association continued to organize an annual plowing match in Elgin County for many years, although some years were missed as a result of economic conditions during the depression of the 1930s and the Second World War, 1939-1945.
The Elgin County Plowmen's Association was a key partner, with the Ontario Plowmen's Association, the County of Elgin and the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in organizing the International Plowing Match events held in Elgin County in 1940, 1960 and 1985.

History / Biographical
In 1907 the Ontario Department of Agriculture established its Extension Branch to set up and administer a network of branch offices in each county to provide advice and assistance to farmers and agricultural organizations at the local level. The Elgin County Branch office was established in 1911, largely as a result of the vigorous lobbying efforts of Wallacetown, Ontario resident John E. Pearce. Each Extension Branch office was headed by the resident Agricultural Representative. Fred Moore Clement of Lincoln County arrived in 1911 as the first Agricultural Representative for Elgin County. Mr. Clement was succeeded by Charles W. Buchanan, who served until 1927. Following Mr. Buchanan were Fletcher S. Thomas (1927-1945), A.O. Dalrymple (1945-1946), A. Victor Langton (1946-1972), Harold Buck (1972-1980), John A. Anderson (1980-[1985?]), and David Murray ([1985?]-[1996?]). By 1923 the Elgin County Branch office of the Ontario Department of Agriculture was situated at 371 Talbot St., St. Thomas, Ontario, subsequently known as the Royal Bank Building. The office relocated in early 1965 to 594 Talbot St., St. Thomas. In a press release issued May 22, 1996, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced the closure of its St. Thomas, Ontario branch office and the consolidation of its functions in a new regional Ministry office to be opened in London, Ontario.

Scope and Content
Photographs of contestants in the Plowing Match. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on October 26, 1950, page one: “Three Generations of Family Compete at Elgin Plowing Match.” 1_894: “Three generations of good plowmen were exemplified by the Lyons family at the Elgin County Plowing match on the A.W. Purcell farm in Aldborough Township Wednesday afternoon. Shown above are, left to right: Roy Lyons, Jr. Dutton, who was fourth in the class for horse drawn plows, in sod, Elgin plowmen; Kenneth Lyons, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Lyons, Wallacetown, who took second prize in the tractor plowing class, sponsored by the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club; Roy Lyons, 4 Omeeme Street, St. Thomas, aged 69, the oldest plowmen at the match; Mrs. Douglas Lyons, Wallacetown, who was placed first in the women’s tractor plowing class, defeating some of the best from Kent and Middlesex; and Douglas Lyons, who was fourth in a keenly-contest tractor class, open to the world. The Lyons really took a lion’s share of the honors, Wednesday.” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on October 26, 1950, page one: “Pictures snapped at Elgin Plowing Match.” 1_895: “Angus McLean, widely-known corn and bean producer of West Elgin, farming north of Rodney, really has an inspiration, Wednesday morning when he decided to enter the tractor class in sod, open to the world. Despite the fact that he hadn’t competed for year, he placed third, one the beautiful silver tray put up by Elgin Co-Operative Service for the highest scoring land by a resident of Elgin; the Imperial Oil Company’s Esso championship for the best land in sod by an Elgin plowman; and a host of the awards, including 100 ponds of chick feed from Reeve A. T. Lashbrook of Rodney.” 1_897: “A veteran of Ontario agricultural service and two generations of the Purcell family are represented in the above photograph, taken at the Elgin County Plowing Match, Wednesday. Left to right are Charles W. Buchanan of Thamesville, retired agricultural representative and Elgin’s first representative, who had a grand time renewing acquaintance. Arthur Purcell, owner of the farm, 3rd Concession, Aldborough, where the match took place; his mother, Mrs. Ella Purcell, who will be 90 in December and his lived on the farm for 66 year.; and Leslie Armstrong, Union, president of the Elgin County Plowman’s Association and also president of the Elgin County Junior Farmers. Mrs. Purcell’s son, John, in farming partnership with him, was too busy plowing to get into the photograph. John’s little daughter, representing the fourth generation on the farm, was also at the match.” 1_896: “Bothwell was represented at the Elgin County Plowing Match, Wednesday, by the Bergey sisters, Joyce and June, who plowed in the Highgate match land competition last week, when June won second and Joyce third. At the Elgin Match, the situation was reversed, with June, aged 19 shown above to the left, winning third, and Joyce, aged 18, being placed second by the judges. Their scores were very close.”

Scope and Content
Photographs from the plowing match in Aylmer, Ont. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, October 3, 1951, page one: “East Elgin Junior Plowing Match Is Successful Event.” 1_2971: “The youngest contestant at the East Elgin Junior Plowing Match on the Leon Bodkin farm, one mile north of King’s Highway No. 3, Aylmer, Tuesday, was also the top winner in his class. He is shown to the left, in the above photograph, Ronald Prong, R.R. 1, Aylmer. Next from the left, seated behind the tractor, is Ronald’s brother, Fred Prong, aged 15, who finished second in their class. To the right is Bev Herman, aged 15, who finished fourth in this class. Stan Heffner, 16, was third in the class, but was not available when the photograph was taken. Ronald Prong scored 68 points to 67 points by his brother, Fred Prong. The boys were all complimented on their work by the judges and match directors. They drove tractors with single furrow plows, brought from their own home farms. John Woolley, R.R. 1, Aylmer, was first in the class for junior plowmen, 17 years to 20 years. Ronald Howe, Jaffa, was second; Peter Honsinger, third. “The boys who took part in the match were virtually all students in the East Elgin District High School, Aylmer, members of the agricultural course in the school. They were organized by William Wood, agricultural instructor at the school, who is shown at the right in the above photograph.”
