They all had a good time, however, and expert plowing didn't matter. Here are most of the contestants in the class lined up behind Warden W. S. - The Elgin County Plowmen's Association was established in late August, 1922 at a meeting held in the offices of the Elgin County Representative of the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food, C.W. Buchanan. At this meeting the following executive officers were elected: Alex Anderson, President; William Wadland, First Vice-President; Sam Garton, Second Vice-President; and Fred Carr, Secretary. At the same meeting, the following directors were appointed: Roy Evely; J.J. Ashton; C.W. Buchanan; J.R. Teeple, Reeve, Yarmouth Township; and R.A. Penhale, President, Elgin County Board of Trade.
- The Association organized the inaugural Elgin County Plowing Match, held October 17-18, 1922 on the farms of James Todd and Alex Anderson near St. Thomas, Ontario. An estimated 4,000 people attended the event, won by William Wadland, Yarmouth Township.
- The Second Annual Elgin County Plowing Match was organized by the Elgin County Plowmen's Association and held October 23-24, 1923 on the farms of Mrs. W.A. Hill and D.W. Bearss, just north of St. Thomas, Ontario. William Wadland, Yarmouth Township was declared champion for the second consecutive year.
- The Third Annual Elgin County Plowing Match was held October 29, 1924 on the farm of J.H. Miller, just north of Dutton, Ontario.
- The Elgin County Plowmen's Association continued to organize an annual plowing match in Elgin County for many years, although some years were missed as a result of economic conditions during the depression of the 1930s and the Second World War, 1939-1945.
- The Elgin County Plowmen's Association was a key partner, with the Ontario Plowmen's Association, the County of Elgin and the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in organizing the International Plowing Match events held in Elgin County in 1940, 1960 and 1985.
- Custodial History
- The records comprising this fonds were originally in the custody of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Elgin County Branch. The branch was closed in the 1990s and the records were transferred to the custody of the Elgin County Library. The records were subsequently transferred to the Elgin County Archives.
- Scope and Content
- Fonds consists of records created, collected and maintained by the Elgin County Plowmen's Association, including minutes of meetings, records relating to the annual Elgin County plowing match organized by the Association for the period 1979-1984, and records relating to the Association's bid to the Ontario Plowmen's Association to host the 1985 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show in Elgin County.

- On February 12, 1957 the Elgin County Plowmen's Association organized a meeting of representatives of various Elgin County municipal, civic and agricultural organizations at the offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Elgin County Branch in St. Thomas to discuss petitioning the Ontario Plowmen's Association for the right to hold the 1960 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Demonstration in Elgin County. A delegation was appointed to present the petition at the Ontario Plowmen's Association's annual meeting in Toronto on February 26, 1957, at which time the O.P.A. awarded the event to Elgin County.
The Local Committee for the 1960 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Demonstration was established on a provisional basis on April 17, 1957, and the following officers were elected: Leslie Armstrong, Chairman; Albert Auckland, Vice-Chairman; A.V. Langton, Secretary-Treasurer and Lands Committee Vice-Chairman; Don Grieve, Associate Secretary-Treasurer; and Ken Bawden, Lands Committee Chairman. The Committee's permanent executive officers, constituent committees and committee chairmen were appointed on September 28, 1959: Frank Pineo was appointed Chairman, Leslie Armstrong Vice-Chairman, A.V. Langton Secretary-Treasurer, and James Galbraith Assistant Treasurer.
The committee was responsible for planning, organizing and administering the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Demonstration held October 11-14, 1960 on the Thomas J. Hume and Sons farm and various neighbouring farms in the vicinity of Springfield, Ontario. The event was sanctioned and sponsored by the Ontario Plowmen's Association, with additional funding support provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Elgin County Branch, the County of Elgin and the City of St. Thomas.

- In February 1980 the Elgin County Plowmen's Association, in conjunction with various Elgin County municipal, civic and agricultural organizations, successfully petitioned the Ontario Plowmen's Association, at its annual meeting in Toronto, for the right to hold the 1985 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show in Elgin County.
The Local Committee for the 1985 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show was established in April 1981, with the election of an initial slate of executive officers. Following a series of retirements and resignations, the following permanent executive officers were chosen: Ken Monteith, Chairman; Lorne Carroll, First Vice-Chairman; Bill Martyn, Second Vice-Chairman; Dave Murray, Secretary; Elgin Wells,Treasurer; Mayor Doug Tarry, City of St. Thomas Representative; Bill Caverly, County of Elgin Representative; Bill Martyn, Ontario Plowmen's Association Representative; Marian Millman, Elgin County Plowmen's Association Representative; and Merv Riddell, Legal Advisor. In 1983, Ruby Silcox joined the committee as Executive Secretary.
The committee was responsible for planning, organizing and administering the International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show held September 17-21, 1985 on the William F. Bradish and Sons farm and various neighbouring farms in the vicinity of St. Thomas, Ontario. The event was held at 41397 Shorlea Line, near the intersection with County Road 25 (Wellington Road). The event was sanctioned and sponsored by the Ontario Plowmen's Association, with additional funding support provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Elgin County Branch, the County of Elgin and the City of St. Thomas.
