- Photographs of the Elgin County Ploughing Match, taken on October 7, 1946.
Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "At the Elgin County Plowing Match on Monday: Exceptionally Good Work of Elgin Men at Revival of Plowing Match; Dinner Held: Contestants Not as Numerous as the Matches Before War, but Enthusiasm Is High and Display Is Meriorious One; J. A. Carroll Speaks."
1_1435: "The youngest ploughman at the Match was Keith Benner, age 17, who competed in the three furrow plowing class in tractor, in stubble. Keith has been plowing for at least five years and can keep his end up with many ploughmen two or three times his age. His home is about six miles east of Aylmer. He finished second in his class."
1_1436: "The oldest woman spectator at the ploughing match was Mrs. Hannah Hepburn of New Sarum, wodpw of Mylson Hepburn, pioneer resident of that district, who died about a year ago. Mrs. Hepburn is 85 years old. She took a keener interest in the plowing events than many of the younger people. She admitted that she had never plowed on her husband's farm but said: "I've done about everything else - hauled in hay, pitched sheaves, milked cows and work like that." Born in the British Isles, Mrs. Hepburn came to Canada in her youth. She has been back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean five times and wouldn't mind making another trip."
1_1440: "Three young women competitors at the Match attracted the interest of hundreds of spectators and won the commendation of the judges and J. A. Carroll, managing secretary of the Ontario Plowman's Assocation, for their good work. Mrs. Grace Johnson, of Mossley, shown above, on the tractor she shared with her husband, John Johnson, finished a close second to Mrs. Cliff Bartlett, of Vienna, in the women's class. She took first in the Harrietsville match last week. Before her marriage Mrs. Johnson, like Mrs. Wilma Schackleton, of Belmont, another competitor at the Elgin match, was a trained nurse on the staff of Victoria Hospital, London, where she trained and graduated. "I think I'd rather do a day's nursink [sic] than this," she said, as the photograph was taken."
1_1438: "The oldest plowman by far at the Match was Alex McCormick, of Shedden, who is in his 82nd year and has been plowing sicne he was a boy of 14 or 15 years. He plowed a land in sod, using the sturdy old all-steel high cut plow with which he completed and won prizes at matches in bioth Canada and the United States over a period of about half a century. Mr. McCormick's plowing was one of the centres of attraction at the Match. He was presented with a special prize by the Elgin County Plowmen's Association.
1_1433: "A corn loader made when he was 80 years of age and still being operated by him at the age of 84 years was exhibited by C. W. Trigger, R. R. 6., St. Thomas, a pioneer farmer off the Wellington Road, Yarmouth, at the plowing match. Mr. Trigger is shown in the above picture explaining his corn loader to Charles D. Coyle, M. P. for Eglin, and to James McBain, deputy reeve of Yarmouth, his stepson. The exhibition of home-made farm machinery and equipment was under the direction of Frank Webster, assistant agricultural representative in Elgin."

- History / Biographical
- In 1907 the Ontario Department of Agriculture established its Extension Branch to set up and administer a network of branch offices in each county to provide advice and assistance to farmers and agricultural organizations at the local level. The Elgin County Branch office was established in 1911, largely as a result of the vigorous lobbying efforts of Wallacetown, Ontario resident John E. Pearce.
Each Extension Branch office was headed by the resident Agricultural Representative. Fred Moore Clement of Lincoln County arrived in 1911 as the first Agricultural Representative for Elgin County. Mr. Clement was succeeded by Charles W. Buchanan, who served until 1927. Following Mr. Buchanan were Fletcher S. Thomas (1927-1945), A.O. Dalrymple (1945-1946), A. Victor Langton (1946-1972), Harold Buck (1972-1980), John A. Anderson (1980-[1985?]), and David Murray ([1985?]-[1996?]).
By 1923 the Elgin County Branch office of the Ontario Department of Agriculture was situated at 371 Talbot St., St. Thomas, Ontario, subsequently known as the Royal Bank Building. The office relocated in early 1965 to 594 Talbot St., St. Thomas.
In a press release issued May 22, 1996, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced the closure of its St. Thomas, Ontario branch office and the consolidation of its functions in a new regional Ministry office to be opened in London, Ontario.

2_3838: "Indians take to plowing. Here are three from the Oneida Reserve (left to right): Sam Thomas, James Hill and Elijah Antone. They competed in Class No. 1, sod, walking plow."
2_3839: "For years Alex McCormick, 82, of Shedden, has held the honor of being the oldest competitor at the annual Elgin Plowing Matches. This year he was again in the centre of things at the match held Thursday at the Auckland farms at Talbotville. Here he is seen (centre) shaking hands with Elgin's Warden, James McBain, as Agricultural Representative Vic Langton looks on. Mr. McCormick has been plowing for almost 70 years, and has used the same plow for 50 years. He retired from farming 30 years ago after hurting his knee while working on the farm. However, he says he can still show a lot of the younger fellows how to plow. Competition in plowing with a team isn't as tough now as it was 50 years ago."
