Physical Description
1 photograph : b&w ; 10 x 25 cm
Scope and Content
Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas-Times Journal article published September 12, 1953 with caption: "The Lads Who Answered the Call to Arms at the Outbreak of World War 1 - Here is a picture that will bring back memories to many of the older residents of St. Thomas, as they study the faces and recognize friends and acquaintances. The men in this photograph, taken in front of the Elgin County courthouse, off Wellington street, early in August 1914, were members of area volunteers for the 1st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, many of whom made up the original First Battalion sent from Canada in the First World War. All those wearing uniforms and helmets, in the two front rows, were members of the old 25th Elgin Regiment, who volunteered for active service, shortly after the outbreak of war. The Times-Journal is obliged to William Wall, 15 Beverly Street, St. Thomas, for the loan of this rare old photograph. Mr. Wall very recently retired on pension from the blacksmithing department of the New York Central shops. He appears sixth from the left in the front row in the photograph. Allan Chapman, retired letter carrier, may be seen, fourth from the right in the front row. Among the many other St. Thomas men who probably will be recognized are Sid Chamberlain, with the Public Utilities Commission for many years; Fred Hall, formerly in the M.C.R. shops, now with the London Life in London, Ont., and William Madison, a veteran of the M.C.R. car shops. A day or two after this picture was taken, the company left for Valcartier, for intensive training. Some of them failed to survive the grind; the others went overseas to take further training in England and were actually in overseas service on February 7, 1915. Mr. Wall suffered critical wounds in the lower parts of his body at the Battle of Givenchy, in December, 1914. His wounds took him out of active service for the remainder of the war and necessitated many long months of hospitalization. With him the day he was wounded was Lieutenant George Metcalfe of St. Thomas, the officer in charge of his company. Lieut. Metcalfe was fatally wounded at the same time. "We were walking close together over a mine-field when a land mine let go," Mr. Wall related. "Poor George Metcalfe really got it that day. He was almost blown to pieces." There are many men in this old picture who Mr. Wall has found it difficult to recognize. Some of them had been sent here from other parts of the district."
The original 1953 caption from the St. Thomas Times-Journal was wrong: the photograph date is 1914, not 1917. Also, it is area volunteers for the 1st Battalion, CEF, not D company of the 14th Platoon.

Photographs of Participants in the Elgin Regiment Battle of Spohn's Flats re-enactment. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on May 19, 1949, page one: “The Battle of Spohn’s Flats.” 2_1094: “From down below when the assault wave of Elgin infantry went in on the final sweep across the enemy strong-hold, this is what the scene looked like. Firing their rifles from the hip as they moved forward in a long lone, two of the infantrymen appear in the foreground and the enemy gun in the heart of the enemy strong-point is hidden behind the clouds of smoke from a round it had just let go. A small portion of the crowd of more than 5,000 who assembled to see the Battle of Spohn’s Flats may be seen at the top of the hill along Stanley Crescent. (See story page one, second edition.)” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on May 19, 1949, page one: “Great Crowd Witnesses “Battle.”: “Spohn’s Flats Show Good Is Verdict of 5,000 Spectators.: Army Week Demonstration by the Elgin Regiment, Cadets and R.C.A.F. is Spectacular Affair, Thoroughly Enjoyed by Vast Throngs; Observes Present From Western Ontario Army Headquarters; Youngsters Get Thrill.” 2_1098: “When the Battle of Spohn’s Flats reached its predestined conclusion with another victory for the Elgins, the enemy gun captured in the assault was hauled away as part of the spoils of battle. Here a carrier commanded by Capt. F.L. Eaton, of the attacking force, hooks on the captured weapon to drag it away while small boy spectators who swarmed down the hillside after the show to hunt for spent rounds and shells cases watch the proceedings.” 2_1092: “Real smoke bomb were employed inlaying down smoke screens in the Battle of Spohn’s Flats and the man responsible for the 2-inch mortar that fires them was Capt. Law Chantler, adjutant of the Elgins. He appears in foregrounds with Lieut. Charles Eldert, signals officer, nearby with a No. 58 set receiving information concerning the effectiveness of Capt. Chantler’s fire.” 2_1093: “Many of the cadets from the Collegiate Institute and the Vocational School Corps who volunteered to take part with the Elgins in staging the Battle of Spohn’s Flats appear in the above group surrounding Lieut. Donald A. Pearce, M.C., who had change of them during the show.” 2_1096: “Bren-gunner John Kaplanis, of the Elgin’s assault force, leads the way across a shallow part of Kettle Creek forded by the infantry in reaching the start-line for their final sweep upon the enemy.”

Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 8, 1957 with caption: "Honor Guard For Brigadier- To be chosen to serve in the honor guard for Brig. T. G. Gibson, D.S.O., Western Ontario Area Commander, at the passing out parade next Thursday evening for the Elgin Regiment's cadet squadron, has been a matter of great competition among the 155 members of the squadron. During the past week, the guard troop of 22 members has been drilling diligently at the Wilson Avenue Armory and its performance is already oustanding. The troop is being developed as a precision drill squad and is practicing 15 drill movements without a word of command. Chosen to serve on the guard of honor are Cpl. H. R. Warren as guard commander, Cpl. R. A. Karn, as second-in-command, and troopers K. M. Vary, G. Petraszko, M. Millman, B. Barnard, M. Skowronski, J. Carter, K. G. Preston, G. Walker, D. Chamberlain, B. Barber, R. C. Hume, E. Merritt, G. Freeman, R. Lawrence, D. Evans, W. Smith, K. Swan, E. Jones, R. Fleming and J. Vigars. In the above picture Squadron Sergeant-Major W. Limebeer and Sgt. W. Smith are seen checking the guard in the present-arms movement."

Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 9, 1957 with captions:
"I Spy- Cpl. Ian McNabb uses a telescope to keep watch on the troops. From his vantage point, he maintained constant check on the proficiency of the men moving under fire." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 9a)
"Section Advance- Skill and fitness are demanded in the advance to the enemy's position. Short, quick moves forward, and taking cunning advantage of all natural cover is part of the modern, army training." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 9b)
"Ready? Let's Go!- Trooper Keith Ferguson, St. Thomas, anxiously waits for the signal to advance into action. Knowledge acquired in training was put to a test within minutes." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 9c)
"Exercise Perspire- As the cadets took a breather during a lull in the battle, some of the young men decided the tactical test was well named. For the troopers, Exercise Perspire meant a realistic culmination of weeks of training." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 9d)
"Elgins At Petawawa- Nearly 100 members of the Elgin Regiment (27th Armored) are undergoing field training at Petawawa this week and being specially favored by the elements. They've had ideal weather compared with other summers when they have been either rained out or have hit it hot. In the above photo, Capt. S. J. Abel is seen briefing his crew at the outset of Tuesday's exercises, the scene being in the Elgin's tank harbor with a row of 35-ton Shermans in the background. His crew members, left to right, are Troopers E. W. Chapman and K. R. Doan and Sgt. D. E. MacDonald." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 9e)

Haycock, Capt. M. A. Johnson, Lt.-Col. J. W. McNeil, Capt. D. Smith and Major. R. L. Chantler." (C8 Sh4 B1 F1 11a)
