detached from Middlesex and formed the County of Elgin. The county was named for the Governor- General Lord Elgin. ( James Bruce, 8th earl of Elgin). The name Upper Canada was used until Confederation in 1867, and since then our province has been called Ontario , being named after Lake Ontario. �ELGIN ASSOCIATION OF BAPTIST CHURCHES. A General History. All ye, assemble yourselves and hear " ( Isaiah 48; 14) must have been the Bible verse that inspired the early Baptist settlers to band themselves together
