and formed the County of Elgin. The county was named for the
Governor- General Lord Elgin. ( James Bruce, 8th earl of Elgin).
The name Upper Canada was used until Confederation in 1867, and
since then our province has been called Ontario , being named after
Lake Ontario.

About 1830, a. group of Regular Baptist Churches gathered together
to form the Western Association. By 1839 it was decided to divide this
large group of churches into two Associations, and the Southwold church
became a member of the Long Point Association. Unfortunately the Long
Point fellowship was not effectively established, and by 1845 all of the
churches had drifted back to the Western Association. In 1859 it was decided
to gather the churches of Elgin and Middlesex Counties into an Association
