Ross Andrews was a photographer for the Tillsonburg News.
Scope and Content
Three photographic negatives of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grant's 60th wedding anniversary, on December 11, 1971. An envelope with the identification of what is depicted in the negatives, is stored with the negatives.
215a was published in the Tillsonburg News on December 20, 1971 with the following article: "Mr. and Mrs. Harry Grant celebrated their diamond jubilee in the United Church parlor on Saturday, December 11, 1971. Mr. Grant was the former Florence Atkinson. They were married in the Methodist Church parsonage, Vienna, on December 12, 1911, by the late Rev. Clark. The wweather was mild and it rained a lot. The sandy roads were water-soaked. There was no pavement but everyone accepted what was handed out to them. It was a double wedding. The other couple was Bertha Priddle, a cousin of the bride, and Norman Ramsey. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey are deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Grant were blessed with a little daughter, Audrey, who was taken from them when she was nearly a year old. They have two sons, Jack, of St. Marys, and Lyle, of Straffordville, and two daughters: Muriel, in Montreal, and Mrs. Bert (Verna) Brown of Scarboro. They were all present on Saturday with their children, grand children, an dthree great-grandchildren. Mrs. Grant's dress was in a violet shade and this colour was carried out in the decorations of the cake, the candles, and the flowers on the tea tables. Her corsage was a mauve and white orchid, the gift of the groom, and he wore a white carnation boutonniere. Many guests were received at the door, including relatives and friend. The couple received many lovely gifts of flowers. Telegrams were received from the Queen, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, PM; Robert L. Stanfield; William G. Davis; Robert Nixon; R.K. McNeill and Harold Stafford. The UCW served lunch in a very attractive way. Mr. and Mrs. Grant wish to thanks all who helped in any way".
Handwritten notes by Ross Andrews on the envelope state: "Harry Grant, father of Lyle and Jack, all operated the White Rose service station and garage on Plank Road in Straffordville at one time or another".

Brown About to Celebrate Their 60th Wedding Anniversary." 2_688: “On Monday, May 5, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Brown, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary in the quiet setting of their 41 Elysian street home. Their friends and neighbors or relatives are bound to drop in. “We have no plans and are not expecting anything but a quiet day,” says Mr. Brown. “Both Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who came to St. Thomas in 1901, more than 50 years ago, have enjoyed good health almost all their lives. But during the past two or three years, each has suffered a heart attack, and their activities have had to be curtailed. “Neither look their age – both were born in 1866—and appear fit and trim. They are friendly persons and easy to talk with. The welcome mat is always spread at the front door, with Mr. Brown even inviting this writer, a stranger to come for supper and partake in “his” home-cooked food.”

Photographs of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roberts. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, December 15, 1951, page one: “Two Diamond Weddings at Copenhagen Being Celebrated Sunday.” 1_3517: “Copenhagen, the little crossroads community where Nova Scotia street turns off No. 73 Highway seven miles south of Aylmer, has never bothered counting heads and a good guess is that its population stands at only around 50. But it is in the news this week-end with two diamond weddings being celebrated on Sunday by two of its respective families. Being honored are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roberts, left, and Mr. and Mrs. John White Sr., whose weddings took place in Luton and Dunboyne respectively on the same day 60 years ago, December 16, 1891. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts have lived in Copenhagen all their married lives, Mr. and Mrs. White have lived there 40 years. While the celebrations at the Roberts home will be festive, with all but one of their children home for the occasion, that at the White home will be observed quietly because of Mr. White’s failing health.”

Ross Andrews was a photographer for the Tillsonburg News.
Scope and Content
Five photographic negatives of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Donnelly's 60th Anniversary, February 25, 1972. An envelope with the identification of what is depicted in the negatives, is stored with the negatives.
228a was published in the Tillsonburg News on February 25, 1972 with the following article: "Celebrate Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary: The storm that swept over Ontario Friday reminded Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Donnelly of their wedding day, February 21, 1912. They were married at the bride's home in Straffordville, the farm today owned by Matthew Schafer, by the Rev. J. Clarke, Methodist Minister of Vienna. The best man was the bride's brother, the late Lloyd Grant and the bridesmaid was the groom's sister, the late Florence Shipley (Flossy Donnelly). The passenger train bringing guests was stalled by snow at Ostrander. Mr. Donnelly says that it is the only time in his memory that the train failed to make its scheduled run to Port Burwell. The couple had planned to go by train to Detroit for a honeymoon. They started out by horse and cutter for Aylmer to catch a train, but the roads were so filled that the fences were hidden under the snow. The newleyweds reached the home of an uncle, the late Walter Mitchell, a couple of miles west of the village and were snowbound for three days. They eventually reached St. Thomas and Sparta but the trip to Detroit was abandoned. Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly held open houses for about 250 friends and relatives at the Straffordville United Church on Sunday afternoon and evening. Guests came from Toledo, Ohio; Royal Oaks, Michigan; St. Louis, Missouri; Fort Erie, Galt, London, Windsor, St. Thomas and Aylmer. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grant were ghost and hostess for the party. The arrangements were made by Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly's daughter, Roma Waller, and by Marie Elson. The UCW served luncheon. Telegrams were received from the Queen, prime minister Trudeau, premier William Davis; Harold Stafford, MP, Elgin; and Robert Nixon, Ontario Liberal leader. The East Elgin Liberal Associations, both men's and women's, sent congratulations. There were many beautiful floral arrangements and cards. Ron K. McNeil, MPP for Elgin, came personally to present a plaque from the Province of Ontario. Mrs. Donnelly rewarded him with a 'Trudeau kiss'".
