Scope and Content
Frederick Bailey, carriage builder and Charles W. Pearce, blacksmith, St. Thomas, ca. 1908. Located at 17-21 Hiawatha Street, on the east side of Hiawatha Street, between Curtis and Talbot Streets. The small building immediately to the north (left) of Bailey's carriage works was Bill Batty's home. Note the projecting roof beam on the Bailey carriage works building, which in earlier days was equipped with a pulley assembly for raising and lowering materials to and from the upper storey. This building was later used by Hamilton and Stott's Plumbing Shop. Immediately to the south (right) of the Bailey Carriage Works building was the Charles W. Pearce Blacksmithing Shop operated by Charles Pearce, who was later the clerk at the Horton Street Market. View is looking southeast from Curtis Street. File includes:

St. Thomas Contingent, 1st Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. at the last roll call in St. Thomas, August 22, 1914. View is looking north on Hiawatha Street from Talbot Street. The Journal Building on the northwest corner of Hiawatha and Talbot Streets, and the Home Bank of Canada building on the northeast corner of Hiawatha and Talbot Streets are visible. Lew F. Thompson bicycle shop is visible on the west side of Hiawatha Street. Businesses operated by C.T. Bull, plumber; Walter Ross, wallpaperer; and Chas W. Pearce, blacksmith/ horseshoer are visible on the east side of Hiawatha Street.Photo was taken from an upper floor of the Huron & Erie Mortgage Corporation building at 472-474 Talbot Street, or the Bell Telephone Company building at 476-478 Talbot Street.
