- History / Biographical
- John Southam Ker was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He was educated at the Royal Canadian Naval College and served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy. When his father, former newspaper executive Frederick I. Ker, bought the Talbot Estate in 1954, John managed the property and turned it into a successful farming operation. Both John and his father were avid historians and encouraged schools, historical societies and other interested groups to visit Malahide, as they renamed the estate in honour of Col. Talbot's ancestral home. John conducted research into Col. Talbot, his nephew Richard Airey and the estate and was involved in creating the Col. Talbot room at the Elgin County Museum as well as celebrations of events in the area's history. He was also a Councillor for Dunwich Township, Chairman of the Elgin Deanery Great Chapter, President of the Aldborough-Dunwich Progressive Conservative Association, and President of the Elgin Historical Society in addition to serving on a number of other committees and associations throughout his life. He died on March 26th, 2014 at the age of 86.
