Eleven black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published December 12, 1960 with captions:
"Still Most Popular - The most popular figure in the parade was the one for whom it was named - Santa Claus himself. The jolly old fellow made a distinct hit as he waved happily to the huge crowd along the mile and one quarter route".
"Tiniest Majorette - One of the smallest marchers in the parade was Bonnie Jones, of the Sou'western Twirlettes, a majorettee group. In the above picture Gordon Roberts, Sparta, one of Old King Cole's fiddlers, gives her a playful toss".
"Little Miss Muffet - The young lady pictured above suffered more from the cold than she did from the storybook spider. She is Miss Cheryl Inger and she was able to muster a cheerful smile as she clutched her curds and whey".
"Shivering Royalty - The Snow Queen and her two princesses were cold but cheerful as they huddled together during the long cavalcade. From left to right they are Linda Helmer, Patricia Webber (the queen) and Lillian Player".
"Clowning Around - No parade is complete without clowns and there were plenty of them in the one at Sparta. These two fellows were perched on top of one of the floats and provided the crowd with some merry moments".
"Pretty Girls and Handsome Horses - A parade just isn't complete without pretty girls on horseback and the Sparta spectacle had more than a few. In the above picture Judy Harvey (left) and Barbara Roberts wave to the crowd".
"The Dutch Windmill - These two youngsters seemed quite unconcerned about the whole business as they nonchalantly squinted at the Times-journal cameraman. The young lady on the left is little Miss Ramondt and her Dutch "brother" is Jimmy McLorn".
"Cowboys Too - In every parade held in the district these two brothers are always on hand with their prancing palominos. They are Reg Knight (left) and his brother Len, both of St. Thomas. They will also take part in Springfield's first parade next Saturday".
"The Big Beast - It was anyone's guess what the animal pictured above was supposed to represent but it drew considerable comment as it zig-zagged down the street. Max Fish is the front end of the specimen with his four youngsters bringing up the rear".
"Making Ready - Shortly before the Santa Claus parade at Sparta was ready to begin on Saturday, the Russell Mills farm was a busy place as floats were prepared for the event. Pictured above is some of the activity".
"Silent Night - This group of happy young singers provided the crowd with Christmas carols as they journeyed along the parade route. Their young voices provided a real festive air to the spectacle".

"The Winner - Santa Claus is pictured above as he pulls out the winning ticket for the "52" Shop in St. Thomas tour to California from the Christmas Chimney containing thousands of coupons. The winner was Mrs. Woodburn C. Lumley, of 167 1/2 Wellington Street, who will be accompanied by her husband, a C & O brakeman, on the five-day trip. After the winner had been announced, Santa Claus handed out candy treats to the youngsters who came along to see the jolly old gentleman".

Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published November 28, 1959 with captions:
"New Parade Float - This is one of six new floats which will appear in the 1959 Sparta Santa Claus Parade. Bambi, who will ride with his forest friends, was fashioned from wood, wire, paper mache, and plenty of hard work. In the above photo, he is inspected by Harry Smale, and his six-year-old grandson, Kim."
"The Pied Piper's Rats - More than a full week of painstaking labour was required to manufacture 50 of these plywood rats which will ride on the pied piper's float in the Sparta Santa Claus Parade. In the above photo, they are checked by Murray Weir, left, and Robert Harvey, president of the Sparta Community Society".
"Times-Journal in it Too - Many hundreds of copies of the Times-Journal were used in the form of paper-mache, to build a large snow-fort which will me manned by snowmen. In the above photo, Jack Arthur, left, and Andy Sim, apply yet another sheet of paper to one end of the snow-fort".
"Chinese Dragon - This Fierce Chinese Dragon held no fear for Cameron Smale, 10, of Sparta, who had a sneak preview of the brand-new parade attraction at Sparta one night this week. The dragon is one of the new floats which will appear in the Parade Dec. 12. With Cameron is Normal Oille, who is storing the monster in his garage until parade day".

Four black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published December 2, 1961 with captions:
"See the Puffin' Billy Go - Here's one the kids will really enjoy. It's called Lil' Puff and will be one of the featured floats in the Sparta Santa Claus parade on Dec. 9 starting at 2 p.m. The little old engine has been completely renovated and is just about ready to chug its way down the parade route. In the above photo Robert Harvey (centre) and Philip Denniss (right) go to work with hammer and brace and bit while young Kim Smale watches to make sure they do a good job".
"The Four Jacks - Here's a new angle for the Santa Claus parade. The float carrying these story book characters will be called "The Four Jacks" and it is well named. The figures depict Jack in the Beanstalk, Little Jack Horner, Jack Jumped Over the Candlestick and Jack Spratt. In the above picture Mrs. Jack Fluelling dabs a bit of paint on Little Jack Horner".
"A Touch Here and There - There's plenty to do in the village of Sparta this week as the residents make free use of paint brushes and carpentry tools. They are preparing for the 15th annual Santa Claus parade which will be held on Dec. 9. In the above picture W. A. Little puts a few finishing touches on the nursery rhyme float called "The Old Woman in the Shoe".
"Snow Needed for This One - A light fall of snow would greatly add to the effect of this float which depicts a scene one would likely see in the frozen north. Complete with igloo and surrounded by make-believe Eskimos it will make a handsome addition to the Sparta community effort. In the photo are Colin Blair (looking out form the igloo) and W. A. Little".

From left to right putting finishing touches to the project are Edward Warren, Joe Vanden Brink, Moreley Gorvett, and Harry Smale. Scope and Content
Photographs of the Santa Parade that took place in Sparta. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, December 10, 1951, page five: “Santa Claus Makes Visit to Sparta: Spectacular Parade Attends Santa’s Annual Visit to Sparta.” 1_3493: “Santa Claus never received a heartier welcome than was accorded to him Saturday afternoon, when he paid his annual visit to Sparta and gave out sacks of candied and apples to little boys and girls at the Pioneer Forge and Anvil, now Sparta’s community centre. The children on hand to welcome Santa Claus were so numerous that he had some difficulty getting into the building. Members of the Sparta Community Club assisted him in handing out the gifts.” 1_3492: “Santa Claus almost lost his voice, Saturday afternoon, calling to the hundreds of little girls and boys of the Sparta district who attended the Sparta Community Club’s annual Christmas parade. Santa came as a personal guest of Don Kay and rode in state in an old-fashioned horse cutter, mounted on a decorated tractor trailer. George Gruber had the privilege of driving the tractor that pulled Santa Claus in the parade.” 1_3494: “A note of novelty was introduced into the Sparta Community Club’s Santa Claus parade, Saturday, in the igloo float, depicting a Frozen North scene with little Donna Denniss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Denniss, impersonating a little Eskimo girl in the entrance to her ice and snow home, with the Denniss’ collie, taking the role of a husky, beside her. The little girl is looking to the north for Santa Claus. A direction sign points to the North Pole.”
