Scope and Content
Five black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published April 25, 1981 with captions:
" The Elgin House built in 1860 and a landmark on the main intersection of Sparta is presently being restored to its original condition. By mid-June, hopefully, the building will be opened as a tea room on the left and an ice cream store on the right. The upstairs has been gutted but will not be used this year. Shirley Roberts owns the property. Total value of the renovations project is estimated at $60,000." (4a)
" The historic Elgin House built in 1860 in Sparta and more recently operated as a hardware store, is presently being gutted and restored. Sometime in June, the main floor is expected to open as a tea room, and an ice-cream parlor. Pictured is Gord Roberts working in what will become the tea room area. The project started one year ago." (4b)
" This two storey structure in Sparta, locally known as the Temperance Building and more recently used as apartments, has been purchased by Mike and Shirley Roberts of Sparta Mercantile. They will be restoring the structure as a factory and warehouse for the fabric products they produce. When the project gets under way, they will increase the number of people working for them by at least 20. They presently hire 42 part-time sewers, many of whom are housewives." (4c)
" For the past four years, Shirley Roberts, along with her husband Mike Roberts of the Sparta Mercantile, has been designing fabric products mainly from Calico material. They started with six part time sewers, and now have 42, but still have difficulty keeping up with the demand. The products are wholesaled to selected stores, and the couple turn down retail outlets almost every week. The couple likes to come up with at least one or two new designs every week. The sewers mass produce the products in pieces. The couple plan to expand the operation from the Mercantile to a warehouse in an old apartment building they have purchased down the street." (4d)
4e shares a caption with 4d. Showns Mrs. Shirley Roberts posing with some of the fabric products produced in Sparta and sold at her and her husband's store, the Sparta Mercantile.

In March 2022, Gail Cromwell Noyes stated the following: "The Temperance House 1840's 46349 Sparta Line. Built by Mr. Hitchcock as the Sparta Hotel, later became the Elgin House in 1851 when purchased by Isaac More. In 1872, it was purchased by Freeborn Taylor and named the Ontario House. It was Sparta's busiest hotel, but it's bar closed by the Temperence group in 1901, the religious groups in Sparta, led by Rev. J. J.Baker, Rev. W. H. Graham and Dr. G. A. Shannon organized a successful temperance drive. Eventually the Ontario House was bought out and it became the Temperance House. It later served as an ice cream parlour, dance hall, apartment house, factory, artist sanctuary. Freeborn later had the Commercial House built in Port Stanley, Ont. which he ran until his death and then it was taken over by his wife Margaret. Located next to Presbyterian Church Hetty & Colburn St.".
