- Black and white photograph originally taken 1897 and used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published February 18, 1954 with caption: "Aylmer Public School Crowded in '97 - With an enrolment of nearly 400 pupils and a staff of eleven teachers, Aylmer's Public School in 1897 was a busy place and members of the school apparently faced the same problems with which they are beset today. Rooms in the two buildings must have been pretty well crowded to capacity. C.T. Burdick was principal at that time and his staff included Miss Mary Arnold, Miss Alice Arnold, Miss Annie Morton, Miss Mabel Wicket, Miss N. Inglis, Miss N. Sowler and Miss L. McCausland. Miss S. Glover had charge of the kindergarten, assisted by Miss G. Hutchinson and Miss M. Faulds. In this picture of the pupils and staff taken 57 years ago are many who still reside in Aylmer and district."

- Scope and Content
- Two copies of a black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published March 15, 1954 with caption: "Aylmer Lively Centre in 1897 - More than one hundred years ago, the town of Aylmer was not a town, but a village and was called Troy. In the stirring times just before the rebellion of 1837, a meeting was held in Caswell's wagon shop to decide upon a new name for the place. A majority of those in attendance at the meeting were in favour of retaining the name Troy, but the name Aylmer, from Lord Aylmer, then Governor-General, was in some manner sent to the Post Office Department. It is a good name, however, and from these early beginnings this town has grown steadily. Sixty years later in 1897 it was described as a good live town of some 2,500 inhabitants, with broad clean streets lined on either side with beautiful rows of maple trees, granolithic and stone sidewalks, a perfect and adequate system of water works, and up-to-date electric light plant and, in fact, most of the conveniences, necessities and luxuries of a city, making Aylmer a most desirable place in which to live. The most striking features of the above view, taken in 1897, of Talbot Street looking east from John Street, are the total absence of overhanging signs and those wonderful wide-open parking spaces. With parking a major problem in all centres today, this sort of thing is the stuff of which modern motorists' dreams are made."
