Patterson" and a souvenir ribbon from the Centennial picnic on July 14, 1909 in honour of the landing in Port Talbot. Also includes copies of letters sent to Patterson from Colonel Thomas Talbot.

Scope and Content: Colonel Leslie Patterson home, Tyrconnell. One of 50 original glass "lantern" slides created in 1933 by Rev. Canon Norman Morris as part of a project to document the domestic architectural heritage of West Elgin. Slides were originally shown as part of a presentation by Rev. Morris to the Elgin Historical Society, November 6, 1933 entitled "Old Houses of West Elgin." Most of the images were subsequently printed in the Elgin Historical Society publication "Houses of Elgin County: Houses of West Elgin", 1998. Published as item number 1 in "Houses of West Elgin" (Elgin Historical Society, 1998) p. 25.

History / Biographical: Colonel Leslie Patterson arrived to the Talbot Settlement alongside John Pearce and his sisters, Mrs. Storey and Mrs. John Pearce, in 1809. During the War of 1812, Patterson participated as a Private and was later promoted to Captain and Colonel. He was known for allegedly saving Colonel Thomas Talbot's life during the war. He was married to Lydia Patterson and had nine children, including Mary, Hannah, Catherine Anne, Olivia, Frances, Lydia, Joseph and Walter. Leslie died in 1852 and is buried at St. Peter's Cemetery.

Scope and Content: File contains records collected by Alison Pearce during her genealogical research project which informed the publication "The Pearces of Little Ireland". Includes photocopies and internet print-outs of reference material related to Colonel Leslie Patterson. Also includes the following original documents: -The Last Will and Testament of Leslie Patterson, circa 1850. -Handwritten note delineating the familial relationships in the Patterson, Wilson and Backus families. -Assignment of Mortgage, dated September 14, 1881, from Thomas Urquhart and William Joseph Moon, executors of the Last Will and Testament of Frances Patterson, to Alice S. Patterson. -Copy of the Last Will and Testament of Francis Patterson, Township of Dunwich, dated July 15, 1881. -Miscellaneous savings and shares certificates issued by the Canada Permanent Building and Savings Society to various members of the Patterson family, 1862-1888. -Transcription of grave marker for Leslie and Catherine Patterson, which reads "Underneath Lieth the Remains of Leslie Patterson, and Cathrine his Wife; the former died January 26th Aged 71 years; the latter February 19th 1800 Aged 62 Years."

Custodial History: These papers were collected as part of a comprehensive study into the life and career of Colonel Thomas Talbot, the early nineteenth-century settlement agent whose authority extended over much of what is now southwestern Ontario. The research was conducted by Guy St-Denis in various archival repositories with the intention of publishing a new biography of Talbot. After the project was discontinued, the photocopied documents were preserved in hopes of being useful to future scholars of Talbot and his settlement. The files were compiled ca. 1985-2003.

Scope and Content: Research notes created by Duncan McKillop, 1993-1994, regarding Leslie Patterson. Includes genealogical information about the Patterson, Pearce, Backus and Storey families.

History / Biographical: Eva Cosens (nee Thompson) was born in Harrow, Ontario to the late Lennox and Silina Thompson. She was a long-term resident of West Lorne, Ontario with her husband, Sydney Cosens, and was known locally for writing articles on community and historical affairs. She often signed her articles with the initials "ETC". She died on May 29th, 1968 in St. Thomas and is buriend at the Colchester Cemetery in Harrow, Ontario.

Scope and Content: File contains handwritten notes taken from Eva Cosen's notebooks about Colonel Thomas Talbot, the Talbot Estate, and the establishment of Port Talbot. Includes newspaper clippings.

Includes correspondence between H. Shearer, the Division Superintendent of the Michigan Central Railroad in St. Thomas, and C.R. Emery, Assistant Superintendent, Dining Car Service in Detroit, Michigan, discussing where and how employees should properly dispose of waste from dining cars in response to complaints, including from the International Bridge Company. Also contains correspondence between H. Shearer and F.W. Cowley, Trainmaster, regarding a complaint from W.J. Shaw, Sanitary Inspector from the Board of Health Office in St. Thomas. Also contains correspondence regarding unauthorized indiviuals stealing garbage that had been removed from dining cars, rather than being collected via proper channels, and a police report being filed in response to this issue.
