- Scope and Content
- Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published February 21, 1967 with caption: "Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) - In 1864, a group of Disciples, under the leadership of Elder Edmud Sheppard, met for worship near the present site of the Centennial Ave. School. On September 14, 1879, the growing congregation moved into a new building on Railway Street (now Princess Ave.) By 1904, the membership had increased to 355 and the inadequate building had to be replaced again. On April 28, 1907, the present building was dedicated in a spirit of enthusiasm. That day donations were received for over two-thirds of the $15,461.40 cost. A peak membership of 538 was reached by 1916. Over tha years, Disciples have varied in the names they used. for some time this congregation has been known as the Church of Christ (Disciples). However, because our International Convention recently adopted a new name, the church voted at its 1967 Annual Meeting to identify with the convention and be Known hereafter as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)."

Cost of the structure is expected to be about $100,000. This is a sketch by architect Bruce Brown, of Toronto, of the south elevation, or how the building will appear to one looking at it from Curtis street. The right side of the annex in the picture adoins the church building in line with the south transcept, shown in dim outline. Of stone construction, it will be located on a portion of the parking lot immediately behind the chancel. There will be a basement beneath at the same level as the floor of the present hall beneath the church. The lower picture reveals the depth of the annex from the Curtis street front, extending across the rear of the church behind the chancel and to the north side of the church. The annex will be connected to the church and lower floor hall by corridors."
