the day, the teachers, who are taking part
in a London District Conference, visited the
museum, the Old English. Church on Walnut

- "Longstanding business - The present Erie Iron Works, 99 Edward Street, is a direct descendent of the Erie Iron Company formed as a joint stock company in 1883 by William Risdon. The firm began at the northwest corner of Curtis and St. Catherine[;] in 1906, it moved to the White Bronze Co. buildings at the west end of Talbot Street. From the beginning, the firm made several types of agricultural implements. Its main product today is wheelbarrows." (27a)

Looking over the architectural drawings for the new 40,000-square-foot expansion in the above photo are: Industrial Commissioner W. Shine Palmer, Mayor E.O. Fanjoy, Leon J. Wilson, vice-president and general manager of Clevite, and J. Fred Green, architect. The two automotive parts plants in the city manufacture powdered metal and elastomer products." (27c)

- "Buckets up - All eyes were fixed on the four-yard bucked of this Michigan 125-B tractor during an equipment demonstration, Tuesday, at the St. Thomas plant of Clark Equipment of Canada Ltd. The demonstration was attended by about 100 of Clark's distributors and customers from across Canada. The onlookers enjoyed the shade of the tent for the demonstrations which followed a buffet luncheon and a tour of the plant in the morning."

- "Earlier demonstration - All eyes were on this huge tractor during an equipment demonstration by Clark Equipment in the mid-70s. The event attracted many Clark distributors and customers from across Canada. Today, the industry suffers from an inactive housing industry which is its main market." (27e)

- "New Conrail diesels - Above are 44 new diesel locomotives recently delivered to Consolidated Rail Corporation as a part of the 215-locomotive, $113 million order the railroad placed earlier this year. When delivery of the new units is completed this year, Conrail will have more than 4,500 diesel locomotives in its locomotive fleet, nearly 400 of which will have been acquired new since Conrail began operations April 1, 1976." - "Complete training period - Jeff Gosse (left), 18, of 16 Montcalm Street, and Ted Fonville (right), 18, of 18 Tecumseh Street, were presented certificates from Don Milroy, Division Manager of Weatherhead Division of Hayes-Dana, Inc., for participation in the company's co-op education program. Both are Grade 12 students at Arthur Voaden Secondary School, and worked in the tool room at Weatherhead. The Industrial Co-op Education Program was established by the Elgin County Board of Education so that some county youths may have the opportunity to apply skills they have learned at school in an actual job situation. The training period at Weatherhead was 320 hours, made up of four hours per day for 16 weeks. when successfully completed, the students earn two credits toward their high school diploma."
- "Co-op program - Don Milroy, centre, division manager of Weatherhead Division of Hayes-Dana Inc. presents certificates to two city high school students after they completed the Industrual Co-op Education Program established by the Elgin County Board of Education. Weatherhead and various other city industries provide youth the opportunity to learn on-the-job skills." (27i)

- "Alma library - Grade 12 student, Carolyn Kelly browses through the pocketbook section in the Alma College library. The colleged was formed more than 100 years ago and has been a private school for girls ever since. Although times may change, the school's basic philosophy of a good, disciplined education has remained." (27q)
- "Plan for future - Louis Vandermark of the Ontario Motor League in St. Thomas stands outside the OML's office located on Talbot Street near Fairview. Mr. Vandermark says that although economic times are tough, the OML is expanding now for the future and has confidence St. Thomas has the ability to rebound back to prosperity." (27r)
- "Third year - For the third year in a row, Robert Chamberlain made the American Automobile Association Apex Club honor roll. Mr. Chamberlain who is sales manager at the Ontario Motor League in St. Thomas receives his commemorative pin from club governor, Ed Luft." (27s)
- "Creates jobs - Don Smith, an employee at Gorman-Rupp, oversees the computer-controlled machining operation centre at the Burwell Road plant. Rather than take away jobs, the machine created two new ones which were filled and allowed the staff to upgrade their skills. The machine will allow the city plant to be much more competitive and represents a foundation for future sales. The plant will be better able to meet changing markets with the machine. "(27t)
- "Once Railway City - St. Thomas became known as the Railway City about a century ago when the coming of major rail lines prompted its growth as a city. Today the industrial sector is still servicced by rail facilities as pictured here in the Conrail yards, but the railways have a far smaller impact on the city today. St. Thomas is currently called The Flower City." (27u)
- "Relic of the past - The historic Canada Southern Railway Station, built in 1872 but now owned by Con[r]ail was a busy place especially prior to the Second World War. Now that passenger service has ended in St. Thomas, the station is empty, a museum piece marking the change in transportation trends over the past century. - "Airport key - Mayor Doug Tarry says he is convinced that the plan to extend the St. Thomas municipal airport runways to accommodate industrial jets is the key to helping the city along the road to future prosperity. The mayor admits that the plan is not popular because it involves such a huge financial outlay for the municipality and so is therefore unpopular with both some fellow council members and some taxpayers. However, he says he will continue to pursue the issue as a cornerstone to his industrial and economic strategy." (27y)
- "Surveys crop - An East Elgin farmer surveys his corn crop as a sprinkler system substitutes for rain. Despite high interest rates and increased difficulties for farmers, the outlook for farming is generally favorable although caution and a realistic approach to rural business will be important guidelines for the successful farmer." - "Forecast fewer students - The Ontario Ministry of Education forecasts fewer students in school by the end of the decade but separate schools may not experience the same declien as public schools because immigration is expected to benefit separate schools. - "Former school - This front view of the Elgin County Board of Education administrative offices on Sunset Drive shows the original structure, built in 1942, which served as Yarmouth Township School No. 17. The current offices are undergoing extensive renovations." (27b2)
- "Important industry - When one thinks of industries, many forget one of the most importatn in the county and world today - farming. If it weren't for farms producing food, plant workers would have a tough time getting through the day. And farming is one of Elgin's key industries." (27c2)
- "Came during 1960s - Early in the 1960s, the city annexed 1,700 acres of land from the Yarmouth Township which included Locke's, Yarmouth Heights and the east side of what is now Sunset Drive to the present site of Parkside Collegiate Institute. This provided St. Thomas with the needed industrial acreage for the next 20 years. One of the industries that located here during that decade included Consolidated-Bathurst Packaging Limited, Container Division, 1155 Talbot Street. The division manufactures and sells corrugated board shipping containers, wooden boxes and allied products." (27d2)
- "Prosperous past - Canron Ltd., has built its reputation the past few decades on its manufacture of freight train brake shoes, but plant Manager Peter Tilley says his company is in the process of diversifying its product lines." (27e2)
- "One of cornerstones - In 1945 the Timken Roller Bearing Company of Ohio began a search in the province for a site for a Canadian branch plant. Officials from the firm first approached the St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce. Today, the plant has become one of the cornerstoens of St. Thomas's industrial sector. In the late 1960's a $1.7 million expansion increased Timken's productivity by 30 per cent." (27f2)
- "Expressway complete - The expressway bypass which runs north through the city is intended to relieve traffic congestion along Talbot Street and to provide another link in a transportation chain that will greatly speed travel form the Niagara area to Sarnia. There is a noticeable lack of traffic on the expressway at present but transportation planners predict volume will increase greatly." (27g2)
- "New fleet - The city police department is currently updating its fleet of cruisers with new vehicles equipped with some of the latest equipment available to police forces in Canada. Above, Constable Mike VanBerkel stands beside one of the new cruisers which are now a familiar sight in the city." (27h2)
- "View system - St. Thomas Fire Department Captain Len Sanguine looks over part of the unit's new Opticom system with snorkel operator, Bob Weare at the station garage. The Opticom system uses an extremely bright flashing light to avtivate an electric eye which automatically turns traffic lights green to allow fire engines to pass. City Jaycees are trying to raise funds for the system judged too expensive for city coffers." (27i2)
- "Inspect engine - Firefighters ar the St. Thomas Fire Department lift the hood on one of the trucks at the station to inspect and clean the engine compartments during daily checks which keep the vehicles in constant readiness in the event of an emergency. " (27j2)
