Scope and Content
Photographs of Miss Irmgard Pick and Miss Marjorie Crossley infront of the Old English Church on Walnut street. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on July 29, 1950, page twenty: “English Teachers on Vacation Visit to St. Thomas.” 1_132: “Returning to St. Thomas for the second visit since she spent a year here in 1933-34 as an exchange teacher, Miss Irmgard Pick (right) of Cheltenham, England, was accompanied this year by a friend, Miss Marjorie Crossley, of Kendal, Westmorland. They arrived in the city of Wednesday evening and will be the guest of Miss Alice Stone, Metcalfe street, and Miss Jean Wharry, Elgin Street, while here. Tomorrow, they will visit Niagara Falls, and in the meantime they have lost no time in seeing places of special interest in and near St. Thomas. They are here seen at the lych gate of the Old English Church in Walnut street, which, although young in comparison to with the churches of England, proved of much interest to them as the pioneer church of the district. Miss Pick, who is a daughter of Mrs. Edith Pick, of Cheltenham, teaches clothing and art at the Gloucestershire Training Collage of Domestic Science at Gloucester, of which she is a graduate, and was on the staff of the Arthur Voaden Vocational School in St. Thomas while here on exchange. That year in Canada was such a happy one that this is her third visit, she having returned to St. Thomas in 1937 also. It is a first trans-Atlantic trip for Miss Crossley, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Crossley, of Kendal, her home being in England’s beautiful lake district, just a few miles from Windermere. Miss Crossley is a former pupil of Mis Pick at the Gloucester College and now teaches domestic science at the Ladies’ College in Cheltenham. She and Miss Pick share an apartment in Cheltenham and plans for the present trip have been a pleasant topic for many months. Before sailing from Montreal in the Empress of Canada on August 25, they will spend a short time in the United Stated and will be guests of Miss Crossley’s cousin, Mrs. V. Tribull, at Rahway, N.J.”
