- Robert D. "Bob" Emslie was a professional baseball play and umpire. He was born in Guelph, Ontario, and moved to London, Ontario with his family in 1868. In 1878-1879, he played baseball for a local team in Harriston, and in 1882, Emslie moved to St. Thomas to play for the St. Thomas Atlantics. He would later go on to play for the Baltimore Orioles and the Phildelphia Athletics. After his career as a player, Emslie had a career as an Umpire for various leagues, including the International League, the Major League Baseball the Western League, and the National League. Emslie retired in St. Thomas in 1925. He was married to Helena, and they had two children, Jack and Helen. Emslie died on April 26, 1943 and is buried at the St. Thomas Cemetery. In 1946, he was added to the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Honor Roll, and in 1986, he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Emslie field in St. Thomas is named after him.
