- Scope and Content
- Looking west on Talbot Street from just east of the corner of Talbot and Hiawatha Streets, ca. 1930. The restaurant on the northeast corner is Diana Sweets. The Journal building (lacking its original domed tower) is on the northwest corner. The St. Thomas Times-Journal building, Post Office, J.H. Gould Department Store, F. Sutherland & Co. shoe store, Edgar O. Harvey drug store, Metropolitan Store, Hardings Clothing store, Tip Top Tailors, Tivoli Theatre, Standard Drug Co. Ltd. store, Strand Bowling and Billiard Parlours, H.C. Borbridge shoe store are also visible. The Journal building (erected in 1891; demolished in 1936) may have been vacant at this time - an impromptu fruit market is set up in the entrance way. A man pushing a handcart is visible. A sign can be seen in the window on the second floor above the Metropolitan Store for Robert J. Elliott, Chiropractor (487 Talbot St.) and a sign in another second floor window above the Metropolitan Store advertises an "Office To Let". The building occupied in this photograph by Diana Sweets Restaurant is the same building occupied ca. 1887 by Waddell Brothers Grocers. Photograph was probably taken from the second floor window of a building on the south side of Talbot Street, possibly the office of Dr. Harold Buck (486-488 Talbot St.). A copy print, retained for reference by the St. Thomas Times-Journal, has been filed in the St. Thomas Times-Journal fonds - Historical Photographs of St. Thomas file. Down the Street to Yesterday Zone 27 (East to Mary). Down the Street to Yesterday Zone 28 (Mary to Hiawatha). Down the Street to Yesterday Zone 29 (Hiawatha to Mondamin).
