Custodial History
These papers were collected as part of a comprehensive study into the life and career of Colonel Thomas Talbot, the early nineteenth-century settlement agent whose authority extended over much of what is now southwestern Ontario. The research was conducted by Guy St-Denis in various archival repositories with the intention of publishing a new biography of Talbot. After the project was discontinued, the photocopied documents were preserved in hopes of being useful to future scholars of Talbot and his settlement. The files were compiled ca. 1985-2003.
Scope and Content

-"Impressions of a Canadian in Europe: Judge Ermatinger has good impression of Dublin Exhibition and Canadian Exhibits There: Visits Killarney and Malahide Castle, the old home of Colonel Talbot, and makes the Acquaintamce of the Latter's RelativesL Dublin and Belfast Explored and Referred to Interestingly", The St. Thomas Daily Times, August 3, 1907.
-"Talbot House and Relics should be Saved EIther by Province or by Dominion: Steps should be taken to preservce historic building, Dr. Coyne believes", London Advertiser, August 26, 1925.
-"Beauty Spot Acquired by Americans", London Advertiser, September 1, 1925. This article describes the recent purchase of the Talbot Estate by a syndicate of Detroit businessmen.
-"Talbot Estate to Become Park: Talbot Estate to Become Park: Government will Likely Take over Elgin County Property", March 18, 1936.
-"Cap Pfeffer Bids Farewell to Fabulous Talbot Estate", London Free Press, October 2, 1946.
-"1897 Novel Provides Character Study of Colonel Talbot", London Free Press, August 19, 1961. This article discusses the book "The Dear Old Farm" by C. Malcolm Sinclair, published in St. Thomas in 1897.
-"Farm estate makes the Colonel look good", by Joe Matyas, The London Free Press, July 17, 1971.
-a notice in the Globe and Mail, February 2, 1977, regarding the auctioning of 500 catalogued lots from the Malahide Castle in Ireland. The auction would take place at the Leaside Memorial Gardens Auditorium. Three years previously, the last male heir, Lord Talbot de Malahide, died, and the Irish government announced that it would preserve the castle as a historic site. But the castle's contents had to be sold to pay death duties.
