village in 1874. Her geographical location at a river mouth on a lake made this area a logical choice for early settlement in Canada West. Port Stanley and muc of the surrounding land was part of the original Talbot Land Grant. In February 1803, Colonel Thomas Talbot, of Irish origins, received a land grant of 5, 000 acres in Yarmouth township. The Grant conditions speci ied that he should place one settler on every 200 acre unit; giving the settler a deed or fifty acres. Talbot himself was allowed to retain
