- Note from Donor: On August 4, 1896, there was the usual large crowd in attendance at the Irish Benevolent Society Picnic which was held at the Port Stanley Picnic Grounds. Thirty-five carloads of excursionists left London on the Lake Erie and Detroit River Railroad in the morning on trains leaving at 1:30, 10:05, & 11:00 AM. Another big crowd went down in the afternoon at 1:30 and 2:30 PM. Upon disembarking the train, the passengers could ride on the Incline Railway or climb the stairs up to the picnic grounds on the hill. Attached is a Lake Erie and Detroit River Railway excursion ticket of August 4, 1896 that has survived for an amazing 125 years. The Lake Erie and Detroit River Railroad leased the London and Port Stanley Railway from 1893 to 1914.
