- Description
- Framed watercolour painting of the Carnegie Public Library of Aylmer, created in 1998. Currently 62 Centre St., at the corner of Centre and Sydenham. We view the building as if approaching from the right side. The building is made of red brick and two-storeyed, with an portico flanked by Ionic columns. The roof has green shingles, and the lower level of the building has green siding. Above the doorway is an empty pediment, except for a semicircular window. A set of curved stairs descends from the door, which expand as they reach street level. The setting is snowy, and we see snow-topped trees in the background. There is a green-sided building at the right of the image, and a white and green building at the left of the image. In the bottom right corner of the image is the signature of the artist and the year 1998. The image has a dark blue matting with a purple inner border. Displayed in wooden frame and overlaid with glass. Built in 1912 in the Edwardian style and the Town's Library for 70 years, it was but one of many financed by a grant from U.S. Steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie. Rusticated cement block, finely mortared red brick, and concrete lintels are typical of the style. The classical and Egyptian features about the door are unique. As of entry, June 2020, the building houses a Desjardins Insurance Agent.
