Description
Framed marriage certificate. At the top of the document are images of the bride (Mary Ellen Summers), groom (Edward McIntosh), and priest (John Saunders). The groom has short hair and a long, bushy moustache. He wears a dark-coloured suit and tie with a light-coloured shirt. The bride has her hair up, pulled away from her face, and wears a dark-coloured dress with a high neck and puffy shoulders. The priest has short, combed-over hair, and a long, bushy beard. He wears a dark-coloured jacket with a white shirt. The border around each image contains text. The groom's border reads "IT IS NOT GOOD THAT THE MAN SHOULD BE ALONE, GEN 2." The bride's border reads "GEN 2, I WILL MAKE HIM AN HELP MEET FOR HIM [sic.]." The priest's border reads "MARRIAGE IS HONORABLE IN ALL. HEB 13." The three photographs are surrounded by a wreath of flowers and leaves. An open book appears at the top of the wreath, with a sash which reads "HOLY BIBLE." Between the bride and groom is a sash which reads "What Therefore GOD hath joined Together, let not MAN put asunder." At the center of the wreath are two hands clasped together, with another hand on top of them. Below these images is the text of the certificate, including the identities of the bride and groom and the signatures of witnesses. The certificate is displayed in a wood and plaster frame and overlaid with glass. The frame is beige, brown, and golden in colour, and has decorations carved in relief. These decorations are ornate, repetitive organic or botanical patterns. The frame's backing consists of two thin pieces of wood. Full text: "This is to Certify, That Edward McIntosh of the village of Springfield, Elgin County, Ontario and Mary Ellen Summers of the township of Malahide, County of Elgin, Ont, WERE UNITED IN HOLY MATRIMONY According to the Ordinance of God and the Laws of the Province of Ontario at Summers' Corners on the 25th day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty. Witnesses: William R. Summers, Summers Corners, Charlotte Summers. By John Saunders C. M. Minister. The Arotype Printing Company, 59 James Street, Montreal."
