- Scope and Content
- Six black and white photographs used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published June 2, 1966 with captions: "Admiring Audience- Proud parents, family members and friends filled the garden theatre at Alma College to near capacity yesterday afternoon when the annual commencement exercises of the girls' school were held. Sixty-four young women received their coveted diplomas to the accompaniment of generous applause from families and teachers. The colorful costumes of the feminine part of the audience provided a brilliant background for the impressive ceremony" (C8 Sh5 B2 F4 55a); "The Graduating Class of 1966 - Scarlet school blazers were worn over their white graduating gowns by the 64 young women who formed the 1966 graduation class of Alma College. These were moments of anticipation and happiness for the students, many of whom later bid goodbye to classmates and teachers, for graduation day meant embarking on new careers and projects. The presentation of awards and honors was a feature of the ceremony, and congratulations on the students' achievements were the order of the day" (C8 Sh5 B2 F4 55b); "Highest Award - The Governor-General's Medal, a gift of Canada's Governor-General, awarded annually at Alma College to the leading student in Grade XIII, yesterday was presented to Paula Leslie Robinson of St. Thomas. Miss Robinson is shown as she received the medal from E. Forbes Raven, chairman of the college board of managers" (C8 Sh5 B2 F4 55c); "Double Honor- When Miss Reta Swain, for many years a valued member of Alma College Music Department, was called upon during yesterday's commencement exercises to present an award for proficiency in singing, she was surprised to find the award was in her name. It was presented for the first time by her fellow-teachers at the college as a tribute to their colleague who retires at the end of the school term. The first-time winner of the award was Ann Glover, St. Thomas, shown as she receives the award from Miss Swain" (C8 sh5 B2 F4 55d); "The Melody Lingers On - As a fitting finale to yesterday's ceremonies, the 1966 graduating class of Alma College sang their school song. In keeping with today's trend, the plaintive notes of a guitar provided the musical accompaniment for the singer. The school song may have ended, but as the graduates promised each other, the melody will linger on" (C8 Sh5 B2 F4 55e); "Proud Parents - It is a proud moment in the lives of all parents when they see their children graduate, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Forbes Raven realized that happy sensation yesterday, when their daughter, Mary Jane, received her graduation diploma during the Alma College commencement. The young graduate also received the Crossley-Hunter Award in religious education for Grade XII students. Left to right are Mr. Raven, chairman of Alma College Board of Managers; Mrs. Raven and Mary Jane" (C8 Sh5 B2 F4 55f).
