- Scope and Content
- Black and white aerial photograph and corresponding negative showing Middlemarch, Ontario, ca. 1955. Looking northwest along the Chesapeake and Ohio/C&O (formerly Pere Marquette) rail line, with Fingal Line at right. The Pere Marquette Railway was constructed through Middlemarch in 1900. Many farmers worked with teams of horses building the road bed. Later, a stock yard and a station were also constructed. Freight trains carried cattle, salt and fertilizer into Middlemarch. During the First World War, many farmers shipped milk to Windsor every morning; others shipped wheat, sugar beets, cattle and hogs. At one time, four passenger trains passed through Middlemarch each day.
