- Samuel Price was an important founder of Port Stanley, but there is no connection between his family and those found in the collection (Burwell-Scott Collection).
- Scope and Content
- The algebra workbook of Samuel Price. Written 1821 (by cover date) or 1824 (by date of first exercise) to 1826. Cardboard cover with leather binding. Notes are written on both front and back covers but are too faint to read. It is a workbook noting theorems and examples for Algebra, Plane Trigonometry and Applications of Algebra to Geometrical Problems. On the inside cover, it is written: "Samuel price of Dunbeggan in the Parish of Bally Mcormick (sic) and County Longford Dated the 17th Day of Nov.r Saterday (sic) 1821." This date is repeated on the inside and back cover. It also says: "Sam'l Price, Dunbeggan, Janu'y 27th 1826. 'Into whose hands soever this book may fall let them take care of it for I had great trouble in seeking many things contained herein and may be useful to such as will teach Algebra.'" Samuel signs his name and gives the date regularly after completing a section of work. At the end of the workbook it is written: "Sam'l Price, July 12th, 1825, The Immortal Memory" and "Therefore 18=My Age, S.P. January 27th 1826 Six." A note enclosed with the book reads: "The property of John Price, Port Stanley, Ont. Geometry used by his grandfather John Price (*Error - means Samuel Price) Dunbeggan, County Longford, Ireland. January 2nd 1826. Rescued from the fire in St. Thomas 1842 by the late Samuel Price."
