- History / Biographical
- The property at 95 Metcalfe Street, St. Thomas, was originally part of a Crown Land grant to John Decow in 1833, and was sold by him to William Drake. In 1842, Drake died and the land was willed to Benjamin Drake, who had the land surveyed and divided into lots. The house was built in circa 1855-1858 for William King Kains. It was later purchased by John McAdam, and then, in 1891, by James Henry Coyne, the Registrar for the County of Elgin. In 1959, it was purchased from the Coyne family by George C. Walker and Verna Walker. During Coyne's occupancy, he constructed an addition at the back of the house. When he died, the house was willed to his daughter, Margaret, who converted it into four apartments. When the Walkers purchased the home, the two lower apartments were converted into one.
