- Photographs of two of the winners of the Bata Shoe company’s Children’s Drum Contest; Kenny Vaughan and Danny Lawrence, and G. L. Johnstone and John Thompson drawing their names. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, July 9, 1953, page seventeen: “Bata Children’s Contest Winners Announced.” 1_1222 and 1_1220: “Pictured above are two of the winners of the Bata Shoe company’s Children’s Drum Contest which was concluded on Saturday. The children are left, Kenny Vaughan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Vaughan, 585 Talbot street, and Danny Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lawrence, 322 Wellington street. Valarie Michie, daughter of Mrs. Georgina Michie, 99 Redan street, and the other winner, was not present when the picture was taken. “At the left are G. L. Johnstone, manager of the Bank of Montreal, shown making the draw and John Thompson, manager of the Bata Show Store, 583 Talbot street, holding the box. The contest drew a tremendous amount of interest and the winners were each awarded a decorative set of drums, complete with Cymbals.”
