- Scope and Content
- Photographs of firefighters from the Shedden, Dutton, Yarmouth Heights and Union fire departments fighting a fire on Gordon Whalls’ farm. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, July 11, 1952, page six: “Sparks From Barn Fire Carried Quarter Mile.” 2_1203: “Four fire departments from Shedden, Dutton, Yarmouth Heights and Union teamed to fight one of the worst farm fires in many years which occurred Thursday afternoon at Gordon Whalls’ farm a mile and a half west of Shedden and just north of No. 3 Highway. A quarter-mile away, a big straw stack close to Earl Chamberlain’s barn took fire, but firemen saved the Chamberlain barn. This is a view of the Whalls property showing at the left the remains of the big bank barn, in centre background the flaming drive shed, and at right, the Whalls home, which was saved.” 2_1199: “Surveying his loss, Gordon Whalls and a neighbor, Harry Carroll, watch firemen struggling to bring one of the worst fires in the Shedden district in many years under control.”
