Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, September 5, 1951, page sixteen: “Albert V. Waters Retires From N.Y.C.”
1_2707: “With an excellent record of over 40 years’ service, Albert V. Waters, passenger locomotive engineer on the Canada Division of the New York Central Railroad Company, officially retired on pension September 1 as he brought train No. 50, the Empire State Express, into St. Thomas from Windsor. Mr. Waters, who resides at 57 Alexandria avenue, was greeted by a number of relatives, associates and friends when he arrived at the local terminal on his final run. Rated as one of the best engineers on the division, he has been at the throttle of engines hauling the fastest passenger flyers in recent years, including Diesels and steamers. He retired without a mark against him being spoken of highly by all officials.
“In the above photograph, taken upon his arrival, left to right, are the following: Harold Dawdy, locomotive fireman; Harry Swanton, engineer, who took the train from St. Thomas to Buffalo; M.J. McLellan, engineer; Mr. Waters; William (Bill) Kelly, road foreman of engines, who presented Mr. Waters with his retirement certificate, and J.J. Maloney, engineer. Mr. Waters hired as a locomotive foreman on January 23, 1911, and he was promoted to an engineer on November 8, 1917, later taking over passenger runs […]”
