Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, July 14, 1951, page eleven: “Happy Newcomers to Elgin From Germany: Ran Away While a Prisoner of War; Back In Canada and Happy on Elgin Farm: Erwin Beier Didn’t Like Being Sent Back to Germany; His Employer, Tom Carter, Didn’t Like His Sudden Leave Taking, But Now All is Well Again.” 1_2455: “Left to right: Mrs. Annie Beier, holding two-year-old Margaret Beier; and Edwin Beier, who was interned in London, England, 12 days before the Second World War started and was a prisoner-of-war in Canada for seven years before he was returned to Germany, much against his will. Tom Carter, well-known North Yarmouth farmer and dairyman, enabled the Beiers to come to Canada. They are established on his farm, occupying part of the Carter home.”
