1_2242: “This notable group photographed at Alma College at the reception following Commencement on Tuesday afternoon, includes, from left to right, Dr. H.R. Kingston, of the University of Western Ontario, who represented the President of Western, Dr. G.E. Hall, at the ceremonies, bringing greetings from the University to the college, which is affiliated with it; Miss Dorothy Young, of Toronto, Secretary of Girl’s Work, United Church of Canada, who was the special speaker at the Commencement; and Rev. S.J. Mathers, Principal of Alma College, who presided at the impressive ceremonies. (See page 1, section 2, for other pictures and page 8 for report).”
Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, June 6, 1951, page eleven: “Fifty Students Receive Diplomas at Alma College.”
1_2238: “It would be difficult to find a more lovely setting for graduation ceremonies than the Garden Theatre of Alma College. The photograph shows the picture which the hundreds of relatives and friends who filled the big amphitheatre saw at Commencement on Tuesday afternoon as they looked at the West Terrace, where the fifty members of the graduating class were seated. They represent a number of countries as well as many places in Canada and friends were present from many different points. The Principal, Rev. S.J. Mathers, presided at the ceremonies, at which the special speaker was Miss Dorothy Young, of Toronto. Dr. H.R. Kingston, of London, Ont., represented the University of Western Ontario, with which the College is affiliated.”
1_2240: “Miss Greta Jones, of Pembroke, Bermuda, received not only her diploma but also one of the prized awards of Commencement, the Sisk memorial scholarship in music, the gift of the Alumnae of Alma College, when she graduated on Tuesday afternoon. A talented pianist, Miss Jones, who will continue her studies at the college next year, is shown here with her mother, Mrs. Albert Jones, who came from Pembroke for Commencement, and her sister, Avery, also a student at Alma College. Mrs. Jones’ daughters will accompany her home for the summer holidays, but both return to the college in the fall.”
1_2241: “Miss Margaret Taylor, left, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Taylor, of Wallacetown, and Miss Loie Rowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Rowe, Gladstone avenue, St. Thomas, smile happily at the reception following the Commencement ceremonies at Alma College on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Taylor was the recipient of the bronze medal in Senior Matriculation, the gift of His Excellency, the Governor-General of Canada; and Miss Rowe was the valedictorian of the graduating class.”
