Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on October 26, 1950, page one: “Three Generations of Family Compete at Elgin Plowing Match.”
1_894: “Three generations of good plowmen were exemplified by the Lyons family at the Elgin County Plowing match on the A.W. Purcell farm in Aldborough Township Wednesday afternoon. Shown above are, left to right: Roy Lyons, Jr. Dutton, who was fourth in the class for horse drawn plows, in sod, Elgin plowmen; Kenneth Lyons, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Lyons, Wallacetown, who took second prize in the tractor plowing class, sponsored by the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club; Roy Lyons, 4 Omeeme Street, St. Thomas, aged 69, the oldest plowmen at the match; Mrs. Douglas Lyons, Wallacetown, who was placed first in the women’s tractor plowing class, defeating some of the best from Kent and Middlesex; and Douglas Lyons, who was fourth in a keenly-contest tractor class, open to the world. The Lyons really took a lion’s share of the honors, Wednesday.”

1_895: “Angus McLean, widely-known corn and bean producer of West Elgin, farming north of Rodney, really has an inspiration, Wednesday morning when he decided to enter the tractor class in sod, open to the world. Despite the fact that he hadn’t competed for year, he placed third, one the beautiful silver tray put up by Elgin Co-Operative Service for the highest scoring land by a resident of Elgin; the Imperial Oil Company’s Esso championship for the best land in sod by an Elgin plowman; and a host of the awards, including 100 ponds of chick feed from Reeve A. T. Lashbrook of Rodney.”
1_897: “A veteran of Ontario agricultural service and two generations of the Purcell family are represented in the above photograph, taken at the Elgin County Plowing Match, Wednesday. Left to right are Charles W. Buchanan of Thamesville, retired agricultural representative and Elgin’s first representative, who had a grand time renewing acquaintance. Arthur Purcell, owner of the farm, 3rd Concession, Aldborough, where the match took place; his mother, Mrs. Ella Purcell, who will be 90 in December and his lived on the farm for 66 year.; and Leslie Armstrong, Union, president of the Elgin County Plowman’s Association and also president of the Elgin County Junior Farmers. Mrs. Purcell’s son, John, in farming partnership with him, was too busy plowing to get into the photograph. John’s little daughter, representing the fourth generation on the farm, was also at the match.”
1_896: “Bothwell was represented at the Elgin County Plowing Match, Wednesday, by the Bergey sisters, Joyce and June, who plowed in the Highgate match land competition last week, when June won second and Joyce third. At the Elgin Match, the situation was reversed, with June, aged 19 shown above to the left, winning third, and Joyce, aged 18, being placed second by the judges. Their scores were very close.”
